1969 Cheoy Lee Clipper Ketch shaft size

My name is Richard and I own a 1969 42’ Cheoy Lee Clipper Ketch that I am restoring and I need some help in replacing my prop.
Boat is equipped with a Perkins 4.236 with a borg warner 1:1 transmission
Problem I am facing is some one put a 1 ¾ prop on the boat with a shim inside to downsize it to around 1 ½ “ to fit my drive shaft.
The prop is disintegrating and needs to be replaced.
So the prop shop I went to measured the size inside the shim at 1 ½, so I ordered a new prop. Well it did not fit right as it slide up the shaft a fraction of an inch to much up the shaft and had space on the bottom, letting the prop move up and down where it needed washers to take up the slack between the threads to get a tight fit.
It also had space inside the prop to shaft at the bottom, enough to cause a wobble.

This leads me to believe that the shaft is metric, but no one even Cheoy Lee in Hong Kong has records of my vintage.
Might anyone have any idea of what the shaft sizing is? Is it metric?

Thanks

Measure it. But also be aware that there are many standards for tapers as well.

Your best bet is to either haul the boat and have the prop shop match your shaft/taper, or hail the boat and replace e shaft with one if known dimensions.

Re: 1969 Cheoy Lee Clipper Ketch shaft size

my neighbor with a cheoy lee 42 clipper said his prop shaft diameter is 1.25 inches. he also has perkins 4-236 which i drool over as i am envious of POWER hahahaha
of course that doesnot guarantee identical measurements for yours.....

ps i could not ask about prop specs as he was at a christmas party and the audio sucked.
meouwry treesmas and i hope you are able to get your issues sorted.

Re: 1969 Cheoy Lee Clipper Ketch shaft size

You can down load the dimensional standards for propeller shaft tapers SAE J755 and compare them to your 1.25" diameter shaft taper. If your shaft does not match the standard, you are in for a bad time. It is completely possible that the yard machined your 1.25" shaft with some metric, or British taper.
