Re: Your opinions on this Tri.

I'm not a fan of battenless mains either. There seems to be a cruising rep for monos about the idea but they do slow a boat down.

Re: Your opinions on this Tri.

On the mainsail I agree to disagree and leave it at that.

My own experiences with cutter rigs, as this Tri will be a cutter, is that the further aft placed mast results in a much smaller mainsail which contributes no more than half a knot of speed to properly adjusted headsails.
I have taken down by myself the batten-less main dead downwind and on any point of sail, something that battened mains will simply not do.
Add the points of chafe, the complexity and the cost of battened mains and you'll realize that they are not a good way to go for long cruisers.

On the subject of the design of the main hull of Juniper and the doubts on any hull that has no vertical sides, please take a look at how Farrier creates more interior volume on his F36 and F39 and think about it.

The New F-39

Third photo down.

Juniper II was a nice design in its day but CW himself will tell you that the design of Tris has not stood still since then.

Ciao.

Re: Your opinions on this Tri.

Nico, with the right cut and area where it counts I'm sure you'll do fine.

Hull flares and wings make a boat far more livable because the bunks aren't stuffed into the ends or the settees converted. If the lee bunk is getting bumped it doesn't take rocket science to realize your sleeping weight would be more useful to windward. If you have the bucks and don't expect a full return you should make what floats your boat your boat. A really long boat to get what you want takes more rig to move and room at anchor for sure. Plus fees in the world, right or not are based on length and beam whether it has one bunk or 20.

Cutter rig, short main, 37ft long. After multiple consultations with the designer mine will be 39-40ft. Meeting scheduled with the builder in early September.

Re: Your opinions on this Tri.

That is a very nice, sensible cruising tri.

Re: Your opinions on this Tri.

if i were ready to buy (which i'm not) i would compare in person the Juniper I (SV Juniper) in Porto Rico and the Juniper II in Florida (SV Carisa), and get a knowledgable person to survey the one i liked better. If she were structurally sound, i would buy. However, i'm not ready to buy, so i wait.

Why don't you consider Chris Whites Explorer 44? Looks like a great design to me.
