Yachtsman reported lost

There's a report of a British sailor lost from his 40ft cat in the Bay of Biscay. The boat details though are saying it is U.S. flagged. Details here...

https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/pho...=date_uploaded

and here...

https://www.premar-atlantique.gouv.f...-de-lacanau-33

Absolutely horrendous weather in Biscay the last few days indeed my ferry crossing Portsmouth > Bilbao tomorrow has been cancelled.

It's a dangerous area from Oct-April.. you can get weather windows forecasting upto 6 days favourable winds/weather but, these windows slam shut really fast in that area as I have found quite a few times as fronts accelerate into the Biscay area.
For a cat anytime before mid April is a spin of the coin.

Re: Yachtsman reported lost

The catamaran has been found “eviscerated," according to rescue authorities.

Very sad.

Re: Yachtsman reported lost

Will be interesting to see if the boat is actually a catamaran. Marinetraffic's picture shows it as such, but their data says it is 12m long with 3m beam, which does not match the picture.

Several news reports have this picture, which also does not seem plausible:

Marine traffic lists it as 40ft however as info is supplied by owners it would not be the first time something has been entered incorrectly.
The picture of the cat was taken in the Thames by Galleons Reach.
I'm more inclined to believe the Mt picture than the one of the mono which looks like 25-30ft max.

The photo on Marinetraffic seem to match the description.

Re: Yachtsman reported lost

It's a 1990 Kennex 380 with Florida registration.
Around the same time this poor guy tried to sail into Bay of Biscay, Vendee Globe finishers were avoiding it because of 20- 30+ft waves , ended into La Rochelle bc coundn't enter Les Sables d'Olonne.

I'm sailing in the Vendee Globe virtual race, and have bailed out of going straight into the bay of Biscay due to a lack of wind. I's much rather go 1000 miles out of my way than beat into light winds. The actual Vendee Globe racers all agree with me.

Regarding weather & Vendée completely right, Clarisse and Benjamin had horrible weather on their arrival.
The incident with the lost skipper happened around the same time.

The poor skipper of the Kennex must either have had no up to date weather report, never have heard about bay of biskays reputation or some other issues preventing him from getting away from that weather system.

What a tragic loss, may he and his pretty boat rest in peace.

Thanks for identifying the make and model. Really nice looking cat which I couldn't identify.

I really don't know what he was doing out in those conditions. The forecasts were horrible pretty much a week in advance and, if as reported, he was a British sailor, he must surely have known of Biscay's reputation.

I see no light winds in the Biscay, or for nearly 1000nm to the West/S West..

Re: Yachtsman reported lost

There is a listing for Pro-Kennex 380 for sale here. I suspect this is the same boat that has been subsequently renamed.

Re: Yachtsman reported lost

The boat listing shows 380 Destiny as the name, but this photo from the listing shows the transom painted with TigerPa (note no space):

The USCG does have a boat under current documentation of that name, 38' x 20', which seems to fit. Documentation is active, and number matches what is on the bow in the sale photos. The Marinetraffic photo show Florida reg rather than documentation, unknown if it is before or after.

Current advisory for Portugal's coast..
Waves may reach 15 meters. Ten districts under red alert due to rough seas

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) raised the number of districts under red alert, the most serious, from seven to 10 due to the strong rough seas this Wednesday and Thursday.

I imagine as bad or worse in the Biscay.
