Looking round the Southampton Boat show last year I was struck by a similar comparison..

There are plenty of out and out racers... J105, Benetau 365, Mumm,
There are plenty of luxury cruisers (both half boats and also proper boats)... Benetau Oceanous, Southerly, Oyster, Lagoon, Sweden Yachts,

But there does not seem to be any sailing equivalent of a sports car... there are plenty of speed boats and some are plain evil.... But no sailing equilevent...

A boat that is well appointed but most of all.... Lots of fun to sail and very fast... Something to average twenty kts plus but with some comfort and not needing a full crew of blades to get it up to speed?

In sports car class you may not be looking for comfort so much...

How about F16, F18, A-class etc... Very fast, low crew needs, low comfort...

I think there are versions of the corsair tris that have big rigs and go fast. With a cabin to boot...

Thanks for this interesting comment. I like the size of the O'49 but concerned about the performance compared to Outremer's earlier models. Could you please explain what is the differences in terms of speed between the new O'49 and the old models??

Regards the O 49 and older models..

Year before last I was at La Grande Motte where they are built for the annual Outremer Cup..

The overall winner was a very old 40/43 called Frelance... however before anyone complains about the performance of the new boats.. Freelance was half way through a refit... like there was absolutely NO interior... just bare hull . so she was very light and she had brand new rags with a flat top mainsail Also the Skipper is one of those old hands who knows the local water .. There ware a couple of 49s who did very well.. but they were not quite racing with a scratch crew.. Although much higher out the water than the 45 and 55 ... the 49 is very fast.. There is even a Utube of someone waterskiing behind one!!

The smaller cats like the Tornadoes and D Class catamarans are also pretty analogous to race cars. They are very fast, have minimal crew, are uncomfortable, have a huge sail area (horsepower) to weight ratio, and have one specific purpose.

See that is the nub of it.. Racing dinghies are fantastic fun as go very fast boats... But one could not go touring round the coast on one? Well you could but it would be somewhat of an endurance ordeal.. Hence going back to my question... Are there any sporty yet comfortable sailing yachts.. (or cats)..??
