What's a Keel Sump
Hi,
Newbs question but can someone please explain what a keel sump is, why and how are they supposed to be emptied?
I've googled and googled but can't seem to find much on it.
I"m assuming it is just the bilge sump above the keel. But what has me confused is on our Perry 43 there is a through hull in that bilge without a shut off. It seems to feed into the keel.
Thanks
Jeff

Re: What's a Keel Sump
Here is the what I mean. There are a couple of through hulls without shut offs, but they seem to go into the keel.

Quite possible, or even likely, that the through hull you can see is a pickup for a keel water tank,

Re: What's a Keel Sump
hmm, maybe but we have water tanks elswhere in the hulls. I'm not on the boat at the moment, but I will follow line. I was fixing the bilge pump when I took the photo's and forgot to follow the pipe.
It just seems super weird there is not a shut off on a through hull which is below the water line.

Which model?
Most 43s I've researched have 100 to 300 gallon water tanks, usually that size is going to be in the keel.
Saba43, 100gal sailboat data site
Choylee 43 ,300gal """
Polaris43,200gal """
Only 1 hose coming out of it?
I'd think the pick up and fill would be separate, as well a vent.

I would think this refers to a greywater (ie. from the shower drain(s)) sump. Typically there would be some sort of pump to empty it, and it would have an overflow to the bilge.

But it’s not really a through-hull if it leads to a tank. Only if leads to all that water outside the boat.

What's a Keel Sump
Garboard drains were once very popular, mostly on timber trawlers but also on other construction. My grp boat has only one, to drain the deepest point of the keel and there are 2 screw plugs to undo, one inside and the other outside. The inner one is real treat to undo at full arms length headfirst behind th engine. My boat is out of the water most of the year so if a deck leak occurred no flooding or freezing damage is possible.... she’s laid up in a high rainfall area.

Re: What's a Keel Sump
I assume since this is posted under "Multihulls" that this is a multihull. Thus hollow keel.
My holding tanks are the sealed off keels. Maybe that's what you have.

Re: What's a Keel Sump
I agree with Skipperpete. It looks like a garboard plug which would be left uncovered when on the hard in wintertime allow winter water to drain out of the bilge.
