Re: What is the oyster marine of the catamarans? It's personal

25 years ago Mabel and David Blacklaws would most likely have been the Oyster salespersons whom you spoke with. Both wonderful people with extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for people and boats. They took the time to educate and match the wants and needs of their clients. And if they did not have a fit for you. They would be the first to say so, vs trying to sell whatever was available. The owner at the time was Chris Mathews. He tended to attract and retain good talent.

I was lucky to have many months of their guidance in 1996. By now the Blacklaws would be in their 90's if alive.

Re: What is the oyster marine of the catamarans? It's personal

I was an Owners Rep for a motor yacht new build in a french yard who built a few of these. I sailed on 2 of them when they were launched. Just stunning. Sails at 15kn in 15kn and easily pushes into the 20's. Well above an Oyster though, with a price point to match. This one has been all over the place, including the Horn and Antarctica. True blue water cruising.

Check out Knysna Yacht Co in South Africa.

My impression of Oyster yachts is that they are tough and practical.

Looking for a similar character in a catamaran, and if I had the money, I would go to Alubat, D'Olonne, France. Their new Ovnicat looks like the perfect yacht.

Note how often Outremer appears in responses. We would agree in terms of build quality based on sailing ours & time at the Outremer yard. In character & performance though, they differ from Oyster. The Outremer aesthetic is unabashedly modern with sleek lines & interiors.....elegant but different. They are also decidedly a performance cat unlike many that use that term loosely. Oyster is definitely not a performance monohull.

130', steel, global range, months duration.
Room for dozens of family/friends.

I think this's pretty oystery.

Well to be fair I know very little about Outremer, but in turn you may be interested to learn that the latest Oyster fleet consists of new, very agile yachts - spectacularly fast with twin rudder and light displacement - they are now as comfortable hurtling around a race course as they are crossing oceans.

Re: What is the oyster marine of the catamarans? It's personal

Oyster is a great boat because it is heavily build and uses top quality components. The trouble is that weight is not really your friend on a cat. If you want a luxury feel in a catamaran, something like a Privilege might suit. I owned a FP and would say their quality was more like Ford than the Bentley that is Oyster. Of the upmarket established manufacturers I like the Catana and Outremer and have chartered the former. Catana have gone through a patch of quality issues though. Outremer can be a bit quirky and certainly many models are small on the inside for the LOA.

For my next cat I would seriously consider Seawind, I have sailed a 1250 which ticked nearly all my boxes, but they have a new 1370 which might be all I ever wanted in a cruising cat

Ocean Explorer Catamarans maybe?
Architect is German Frers. Built in Finland, really expensive. Seems like a multihull oyster to me.

The Antares cats have that great wood interior. All the wood is veneered over foam panels to keep the weight down. It’s an expensive way to do it and they are expensive boats, but very nice.

No hangar for the helicopter, just not terribly practical from this guy who used to deploy from helicopters on ships and more importantly run the maintenance programs on said helicopters

Re: What is the oyster marine of the catamarans? It's personal

Manta 40 or 42 if you’re looking for a slightly older boat. Built 1996-2008, the Mantas are super well US built. All are owners versions with the same layout but each slightly customized by the individual buyer. We’ve had ours almost 8 years. Great active owners group. Love our boat (and no it’s not for sale. But there are a few currently in the market!). Good luck with your search. If looking larger... If price is no object, look at HH Catamarans HH50 or their OC50. Also like the Knysna 50 and the Xquisite X5, although you might want to check out the new Xquisite Solar Sail 60 as soon as they have more info!

Dean catamarans are probably the closest thing I’ve seen. Lots of wood. Sturdy build.
