check out Yachtworld.com to get ideas. In the Great Lakes area, drive around the boat yards and look. lots of bargains out there now with the crappy economy. Probably less than half of the boats in Muskegon splashed last year. Buyer's market.

If I had had that to spend I would probably be sailing a Privilege cat today.

Is that good? And don't get me wrong, this is after ten or so years of saving and a lifelong dream. I'm an average American, not a rich person from god know where using 100$ bills for home made cigarettes!

Re: what can i get with 175,000
You can get one of these with change and enough spare money to make some comfort improvements.
Fountaine Pajot Athena 38.
You would just barely scrape in a Lagoon 38 at that price if you were lucky, but you wouldn't have enough spare cash to kit it out a little better which it would need at that price.
I mean, look at those people on the deck, they look to be having a great time!
That's probably the best value for production cats, but there are of course plenty of one-off and custom builts for possibly less.
For roughly $40k less you'll pick up a Fountaine Pajot Tobago 36.

Re: what can i get with 175,000
Lt I'm in the same boat as you. I've looked at 12 year old over priced Lagoons with 8000+ eng hrs, Gemini, one offs. Soon will look at Mahe and Athena. Geminis are of so poor quality I would be embarsed to tell friends the price. Started looking at 5 - 7+ old Gems. All have so much gelcoat crazing..Mahe seems ok but 07 08 osmosis problems worry me. I don't want a 15k bottom rework. Lagoon 380 is my favorite heavy weight. Looking forward to checking out a older Pajot. Good luck on your hunt.

Re: what can i get with 175,000
On your other thread you said you didn't have the money yet. Your question is like me asking what used car should I buy for $10,000.
So......
Browse Yachtworld and Craigslist. You look at enough boats for sale and you will gather an idea on what is a good price and what specifics to look for or problems to look out for. There are almost no "bad" production boats. Some are just better or less bad just like cars. The customs and one offs can be a good buy and are generally cheaper. Most are not "bad". Read the mags and books and blogs.
You probably want to read the Bumfuzzles blog. It's about a couple that sail around the world with absolutely no experience. Start at the beginning.
When you start to get a better idea of your needs then ask more specific questions. Good Luck

Re: what can i get with 175,000
I did,, but when i tried heading to Colombia the USCG stopped me. They did not like the extra long "snorkel" I put on it. I told them I just wanted to look at the sea life 40 feet below the ocean floor.
They asked about he extra fuel tanks and why there was such a large storage capacity for cargo. told them it was just to bring coffee beans back to the US.
For some reason they did not believe me and towed me back to Miami. Still trying to get the boat back but they are charging me for dockage at commercial prices. Thinking of heading to Mexico and look for a large power yacht with small engines and a sail

After you spend 199.999.00 how much do you have to "run" it with?
Not that I want to know what you have but you need a bunch to set up the boat for your use and a bunch to maintain it that way.
Saving 200k and using it to buy a boat for 200k is not wise, or so I have heard/read.
