Re: What boatspeed should I expect, as a percentage of True wind?

Also on the topic of winches (sorry for drifting off topic @GRIT), have you seen the Karver 'Extra Speed Winches' and 'Extra Power Winches'?

Without being a large wide body multispeed racing winch, they still offer 4 speeds. I bet they are serious money though...

https://www.karver-systems.com/en/?o...gory&path=7022

"In 2018, Karver acquires the Pontos company and benefits 15 years of experience to make this range of winches even more efficient.

The KWS range (Ultra Speed) and KWP (Ultra Power) are 4 speed winches: 2 classic speeds and 2 extras for either 6 times more speed (KWS) or 3 times more power (KWP)."

Here's a couple of videos:

That looks interesting too. The electric motor is actually up inside the winch drum, instead of in the base. Even better for mounting on the mast or in another difficult location.

A fast boat should expect anything from 40% to 125% of the TWS depending on the point of sail and conditions.

Thank you JMH2002

We are off topic; but this is where the thread lead us. It's nice, when folks are respectful, to see a thread's natural progression to other important topics. Please carry on...

It's a pleasure to read everyone's opinions on the subjects covered in this thread.

Cheers.
Paul.

Re: What boatspeed should I expect, as a percentage of True wind?

I'm leaving tomorrow evening for Beaufort, with Charleston as my bailout port. I'm single handing, 370 miles to Beaufort NC from St Augustine, Fl. If the weather holds and I'm enjoying the trip, I'll hit Beaufort sometime Sunday; if not, then Charleston or Southport on Saturday. I don't sleep on trips of this length, especially along the US coast; as it's a pretty busy coast.

If I find myself getting tired, I'll bail out somewhere and anchor for a spell. This coast is full of inlets for a shallow draft boat.

The forecast looks good, with Southerly winds building from 12 to 20 with gusts to 30. If I get 30, then I'll be making a quick trip. The gulfstream should help too.

Cheers all.
Paul.

You’re a better man than I, I can’t go 18 hours without sleep! Are you hanging in the Chesapeake for hurricane season?

You're right, what was I thinking... it's only 370nm. I'll be there Saturday night, for sure!

Thanks Jmh2002.

Re: What boatspeed should I expect, as a percentage of True wind?

SMJ:

Actually, we're headed for Canada. My wife's visiting family until May, so I'm trying to get as far north as I can. I don't like when she has to work all week, and travel all weekend too much. It takes the fun out of cruising.

I'm better at staying up for two nights straight, if the first night is the starting point. If I left in the morning, I'd not make it through the second night.

I'll be napping a lot tomorrow.

Cheers.
Paul.

Careful. You’ll be arriving in Beaufort before leaving St Augustine and we’ll all seem to have aged dramatically.

Re: What boatspeed should I expect, as a percentage of True wind?

If that means I'll get younger, then I'm going to push hard on that trip.

After two days awake; I'm the one who'll feel like he's aged dramatically.

Cheers.

Re: What boatspeed should I expect, as a percentage of True wind?

Still 12 miles out. But it was a decent passage. Very slow at first, with winds of 5 to 7 knots, building to 30 knots on Saturday night.

Cheers.

Saw you anchored in St Augustine last week. Good looking boat. I was tempted to come out and say hi. I hope you had a safe passage north.

Re: What boatspeed should I expect, as a percentage of True wind?

Thanks for the compliments, we're happy with her so far. But we'll be excited to finish the interior.

I'm sorry I missed you in St Augustine. Maybe next time?

It was a very nice trip. I slowed down somewhat for the last 20 miles or so, trying to time the tide out of Beaufort. Of course, when I decide to slow down, the wind picked up... Still, it was one of my nicest trips up this coast; and certainly my fastest (formerly monohulls).

Cheers.
Paul.
