Turns out the mystery blonde wood I used for the trim on the funnels is North American Beech.

The beam troughs are a challenging part of the boat to restore, with ply running under one beam and over another. I have reinforced the floor of the trough with another layer of 18mm ply that will be filleted and glassed.Click image for larger version

Re: Wharram Narai MK lV .

Beam troughs are highly prone to rot. Micro fractures occur due to twisting. You might consider extra layers of fiberglass and/or fillets and inspect the area regularly once you are on the water.

I am not eliminating the troughs on my Narai altogether. I remember the trough rot, and subsequent hull rot under the troughs on my old Tangaroa.

Re: Wharram Narai MK lV .

"Beam troughs are highly prone to rot" - interesting. when I started building my Tangaroa in 77 the Mk iV plans were not available, so mine was the MKI with the beams on deck. I always regretted that later on, figuring the extra headroom & the cleaner decks (there really was a lot of clutter on the MKI decks!) of the MKIV would have been nice to have. seems it would have come at a price...

So after a lot of gead scratching and prototypes a final design for the lashing pads has been decided upon.Click image for larger version

To this end i glued in an extra layer of 18mm ply on the trough floor. The beams themselves sit on hardwood pads further isolating the beam from the trough floor.

Oh that would be the hippie inspired rear facing windows in the shape of dolphins i think.Seems to me whoever built them was on the herb that day.
I can't figure if they are groovy or not yet man.
