We are new to this :) lagoon 40 VS Lipari 41 or ?
Hello
We are new to this Multihull... and looking for Multihull about 40" and used.
We are from Denmark, but want to keep the boat as "summerhouse" in the MD for some years before we sail out and "around" the world
example the lagoon 40 or Lipari 41, what are - + for this models ? best in your opinion ? fair or fare better models in this class ?
Also looking for place in the MD to keep the boat for summer and winter...
PS. If any got gast room for a week or 2 in summer 2016, for a small family like us (we are 47 38wife, 9girl), please tell we like to try the Multihull life...

Dear Rigo, Irina, and Mira,
Welcome aboard. I don't know the Lipari, so cannot comment. I consider Lagoons to be generally rather poor sailors and frequently with many build quality defects. There is a current thread on CF concerning this very issue and their poor customer service and aftersales support. I have known many with rudder failures and other structural issues, even or perhaps especially when new.
Some of the more Ocean conceived Leopards are very nice, if you avoid the newer ones with a front "patio", which is a very bad feature for an Ocean boat. I also recommend you look at older models such as the Switch 55, which seems to be an excellent sea boat.
Good luck!

You are not stating the positive feedback from Lagoon owners, I am a VERY satisfied owner and only one of many....

Re: We are new to this :) lagoon 40 VS Lipari 41 or ?
Me too. I am very pleased with the sailing properties.
The Lagoon 400 has considerably more space than the Lipari. But for three persons the Lipari has enough. I don't like the build quality of FP interiors. (And I have never heard of osmosis problems with a Lagoon). But the FP cats are not so heavy already. And perhaps you can feel that if you are a very good sailor. But at the most cruiser competitions like Kornati Cup, ARC the Lagoons won. Sometimes the L400 bevor the L450.
It is no Problem to find a place for the boat in the Med.
I have sent you message about sailing in the Mediterranean.

Dear Muckle Flugga - greetings. We are fully aligned on this - I agree with every sentiment. Finally, we have done it. Best regards.

I am here in Tampa, Florida and Sailing Florida has a Lipari 41 3 cabin / 2head version in their chartering fleet and I have family of 4. If you wish to do a chartering vacation and would like some help let me know.

I am a very satisfied Lagoon 42 owner. (10 years 10 thousand miles). Lipari's are good but lighter in construction.
BTW, I wouldn't take advice from someone about catamarans who doesn't know what a Lipari is.

Yes, there are a lot of advice from people who have not sailed the boats, which they evaluate.
What we have done to find out, which boat we like, is to charter one by one. If money plays a role, you go to the Mediterranean end of September/Oktober as the prices are lower then, and the the weather mostly (not this year) still very good for beach holidays with children. Even cheaper it is, if you are planning a year ahead, as there is then Discount up to 50%.

So let's forget shall we the court case a few years back where a couple were awarded three million dollars by a US judge against FP for their deception in selling them a damaged boat? Or the fact they have still yet to receive any compensation because FP are hiding behind the french court system?

We love our Lagoon 420. All this negative stuff about sailing is rubbish. Goes fine, solid, easy handling, comfortable. No gelcoat/fiberglass issues. Often hear stories about osmosis on FPs?

We spent a few weeks at Marina Saidia in Morocco, in 2011 it was nearing completion.
A huge complex with restaurants, banks, great management/security, world-class finish, and the cheapest marina we have ever been anywhere in our 5y at sea.
Great place to leave the boat and explore Morocco by train.

Hi Rigo, Irina, Mira
I think that you should assume that there is a level of risk attached to buying a boat that you would not expect if you were buying a similarly priced car. Customers seem to be the testing pool rather than extensive track and road testing that occurs with production cars and all of the production boat manufacturers have had varying degrees of problems with quality control and at times particular models so overall I would make very, very sure that a) your agent has a very good record of supporting clients and going to bat for you with the manufacturer and b) you go through the boat incredibly carefully, employing a surveyor if required, and don't leave the delivery point until you are happy that they have rectified everything. Going to the factory delivery point rather than having the boat delivered to you may make this easier.
If it will help you, I have developed a spreadsheet that is designed to make the catamaran buying decision process more objective. You are welcome to a copy and I have sent you a private message with more details.
I wish you all the best with your voyage of discovery.

Toys with time is correct so make sure whatever boat you buy the AGENT has a really good reputation as he is the one you will be dealing with all the way through the process.
PS - Simpson Marine is the agent for Lagoon in Asia and l have been impressed with their commitment and service for the past 20 months as they have been great.

We too are a very satisfied Lagoon owner who live aboard and are sailing around the world. We have not experienced any of the severe problems mentioned above (nor have I heard of any) and have also received excellent service from our agent and Lagoon directly. We do experience technical issues with installed equipment that for the most part are easily resolved but this is standard fair on any boat. It sails great, excellent utilisation of space, quite easy to maintain, strong hulls. Ours is a relatively new boat where we've crossed the Indian Ocean this year in some tough condition so its been 'tested'.
Follow the standard protocol before making your decision including taking sail trips on both your desired yachts, have a good surveys performed preferably with you being present, continue research, etc.
I cant offer any objective opinions on Lipari's as Ive only visited them, not sailed them.
