Used catamaran project
Hi there,
I am new to the sailing world. I found a catamaran for sale which seems interesting to me. The problem is that the catamaran is 20 years old and need repair works because it has taken a lightning. The catamaran has been moored 4 years in the marina without hauling out and is still moored in the marina, in the sea. I couldn’t find a surveyor in the area who can check the catamaran for me.
Any advice or comments are welcome.
Thanks

Re: Used catamaran project
What is the “area”?
What sort of “repair work”?
What specifically are you asking?

Re: Used catamaran project
The catamaran is 44ft Perry.
The seller said : It has some entrance of water from windows, needs maintenance. No batteries / no electricity. Needs engines repair, new electronic, new electric (fridge, etc...) some paint works.
The boat is in the caribbean.

If the price is right and you factor in the minor rebuild...

Ok, according the description that I gave and the photos.
What is a reasonable price range?

If he was giving it to you it *might* make sense. Just know, you are going to throw piles of money at it. (Big piles)
As someone once told me, "The most expensive boat I ever owned was given to me for free".

The one in Panama, right? Pics of interior look good, engine pics look bad. The lightning strike is certainly an unknown. Shaft drives might be OK, but I would be concerned if it has saildrives. The $70K price might be OK if in the US but lots of extra costs if in Panama.

Re: Used catamaran project
If you have the money to refit, and enjoy doing projects, go for it.
If you have the money and want to go sailing, buy something in better shape that's close to ready to go.
Either way will cost a relatively comparable amount

So lighting strike (never know what fun stuff you will find), water damage (another way to create hidden damage), needs new engines, needs fiberglass/paint work, needs new electrical system and electronics and it's not a brand name production boat. And it's sat for 4yrs rotting...
If you give me $20k, so I can at least pay to dispose of it properly, I might consider it if I just enjoy projects.

Re: Used catamaran project
Yes indeed that is the one in Panama.
If the project will take 3-6 months to completion it is ok? I don't know !
Otherwise as wisely suggested I will put more money and look around for another boat with less uncertainty.
Thank you guys

Re: Used catamaran project
I like the looks of that boat a lot. But from what I have seen ( youtube ) most people seem to take a year on total rebuilds. Sure could you do it faster, yes but its a full time job.
I second the opinion if it was given to me, it might be worth it.

You’re not going to “refit” that boat in 3-6 months unless you fill a container with everything you need in Miami and ship it to Panama. Then you’d spend a fortune for the small army of people you’d employ to manically make everything come together in a short time.
I suspect if the problems were superficial the previous owner would have carried out repairs.
