Seems like a lifepo battery and some thin flex solar panels would be a good way have some power while keeping the weight down.

Agree. I got a Battle Born battery and have been very happy with it. Part of the OP's problem is the cost of stuff like this may be above his price point.

I know you ASKED only for successful ocean crossings, but sometimes we learn more from what we don't want to hear about... I knew the owner of this boat, who wasn't aboard for this passage. A different perspective.

Aside from the big disaster, as you are reading take a mental inventory of everything that was broken or not working, or leaking, or whatever. This is not a boat made for crossing oceans.
