Re: TITANIUM CATARMARAN

A Quote from Jody Culbert, the designer of the catamaran, who shared some info on the Robert Perry designer FB page: "One of the big costs is the gas shield envelope that is needed to purge the atmosphere from the welding area. The high temp of the welding process forms a heat affected zone and the gas purge has to be maintained during and after the metal cools off. Jim has worked out a lot of tricks to keep the shielding gases (argon and argon/helium I believe) contained but they are going through some big monster pressure bottles of the stuff for sure....they are using CP2 Ti for the most part."

Interesting build to say the least.

Indeed.
Depending upon temperature & specific alloy:
Titanium has a thermal conductivity of around 20 BTU/(hr·ft⋅°F), compared to copper and silver both at around 400, gold @ 300, platinum @ 70, magnesium @ ±50, cast iron ± 50 BTU/(hr·ft⋅°F).

Re: TITANIUM CATARMARAN

Will someone explain to me why the decks would be built out of composite material and not titanium?
