I think this needs a poll.... How many boat owners who have monos... and have had their boat(s) for say 10 yrs minimum would buy a cat and how how many would stick with a mono?

I think if your talking Condomarans I'd stick with a mono.. but for me its an irrelevant question.. doubt I'll win any lotteries.. and if I did, it would be a tailor made Wharram..

Re: The Reason People Are Moving Away From Monohulls

I'm getting too long in the tooth to be making major changes plus it took me several years to get our boat all worked out and I don't have the time to go that whole route again with a Cat notwithstanding that it would take me another couple of years to be able to sail it up to potential. That said if I was a bit younger it would be fun to take a crack at cruising a Cat. I got spoiled sailing a performance Cat so that is the only type of boat that would interest me.

Re: The Reason People Are Moving Away From Monohulls

We had a mono up until buying our first cat 25 years ago. We recently reached the point where owning a $100k+ cruising cat wasn't making financial sense, so started looking at monos. Luckily we found the catamaran we have now for a great price. To be honest, if we had purchased a mono I think we would have used the boat as a day sailor or weekender as it wouldn't fit OUR preference as a longish term cruising boat.

Rolling at anchor is way overstated, sure sometimes it happens and some anchorages are bad but I have to say that uncomfortable rolling while at anchor over the last full year of cruising might have been one night. Certainly not a reason to choose one over the other. Important items are comfort, safety, speed and live ability, anchoring not so much

Re: The Reason People Are Moving Away From Monohulls

The main reason for us moving to a catamaran was the rolling motion of the monohull. I'm sure some aren't bothered by the motion where others may be.

See I learned something, I did not know the transom design was that inefficient in a cat that it caused that much cavatation. I know the few times I've done 8+ knots in the Rose, the wake off the stern was pretty flat. That was close hauled too, and still only heeled a delightful 15-20 degrees.

As I said previously, I like all boats. I do so enjoy my 48 year old monohull with it's solid glass hull and deck. I like being rocked to sleep too. A delight. For the lower budget sailor Mono's with its single engine, and lower overall cost of ownership, just makes sense.

The really cool thing is my boats sale price has NOT fallen at all in the last 10 years. It might even have risen a bit. Actually compared to it's original purchase price it's worth more now. OK not adjusted for inflation.

Just like monohull's there are different designs of cats. The cat in the photo was not designed with performance as a priority, therefore the fat hulls will produce more turbulence of the stern.

The Reason People Are Moving Away From Monohulls

I am perfectly happy with my Hunter 356. If I has several millions in cash, I would not buy s cat. We cruise our 356 and are very happy on it.

In our area on Kentucky Lake, we have three marina's with sail and powerboats numbering about 1,000. I only know of one Cat and the guy who owned it sold it a few years ago and I haven't seen it since. In our Marina of 208 boats, all sail. There is not one cat. There is not room for one.

Just the limitation on where you can slip one makes cruising one a unique problem on inland waterways. We have a lot of loop boats come through Lighthouse Landing. I don't think I have ever seen a cat on the loop at our marina. I'm sure there are some, but I haven't seen any.

I just looked on Google Earth at all the marina's in Kentucky Lake from Kentucky Dam to the mouth of the Tenn-Tom waterway - total of approximately 200 miles of waterway, Hundreds of sailboats, total of 4 cats. One At Moors Marina and 3 at Grand Harbor. It may be a fad some places, but certainly not yet showing up on The Tennessee River.

Decided for the fun of it I'd look down the Tenn-Tom all the way to Dog River in Mobile. None for 450 miles until Dog River; 1 cat at Turner, 2 at Dog River Marina.

The premise of this thread doesn't match with the facts.

I certainly am not opposed to cats, but I just wouldn't want one.

Yup, you got me. Over the last 25 years this has happened to us at least twice a year.

Re: The Reason People Are Moving Away From Monohulls

Seems like a monthly occurrence when someone starts a thread that says between the lines that one should inevitably own a catamaran, and if one doesn't, something is wrong with them.
