Re: The Reason People Are Moving Away From Monohulls

Speaking of space, speed and security, I am curious how the numbers add up? Boat itself could be bought at reasonable prices second hand, but I see most upkeep components (mooring/other marina costs, dry, etc) multiplied by 1.5x. This means that a 40' mono competes with a 26' cat - if budget is of any concern.

As for speed, cats are maybe 30% faster than a monohull with the same length. - Right, but compare with the same-cost, 1.5x longer mono, then there is no speed advantage anymore...

Yes, i know, but i FEEL better on a monohull. that´s what i want to say.
It´s the FEELING :-)

on multihulls, I always have the concern thought about capsizing-> ONLY in bad weather conditions (10bft and up and big waves)
I had some encounters with conditions like above with monohulls, maybe with cats, I will get some brown stripes in my panties :-)

Stop walking past Harrods..
12kts might be a little optimistic with only 50hp. I suspect you may run up against hull speed.

Then again, Gemini had a video recently where they put a couple large HP engines on a stripped out model and were well into double digit speeds. It was a promo thing and they didn't give details about what they did beyond the engines.

Maybe if your feelings were based on fact it steps away from being prejudice....

I don't know.. they are more or less shallow V hulls and I hit 16kts+ (not surfing) sail only on my Tiki 26.. 12+ on my 21.. under sail.
No way the 5hp ob could match that on the 26.. the 21 I sailed engineless.

Heeling beyond say 30° means an overcanvassed boat
Anything lesser is just pleasant and... faster
Pounding is typical of modern flat beamy designs.

My 54' displaces 27tonnes and has 11tonnes ballast, and all tanks UNDER my heels.

It is like a hot knife into the butter, in rough seas.

Were l a millionaire, l'd ask for a replica of a similar design (65-70') from the early 80s, with hydraulic power on deck, and hybrid propulsion, and both AC and DC generators.

Interiors, by my own whims :-)

Not sure what country you are located, or if you have any experience with a catamaran or associated costs, or are just making up this 1.5x figure. In my real life ownership experience in the US, from Gulf of Mexico thru Bahamas, there is no higher cost for docking at a marina for cats vs monohulls. Same $ per foot price list. Sure it takes more bottom paint, and I have two motors (which I guess that is a choice, but the maneuvering advantages of second motor far outweigh maintenance concerns), and it costs more to be buffed and waxed (when I don't do it myself). But ongoing maintenance cost multiplier? You are way off here, in my experience in the US.

Now, cost to purchase. I suspect that's more like 2x, or maybe even higher. Just like monohulls, there is a wide range of quality and cost for an x-length boat. So its pretty hard to come up with a valid x factor. But it certainly is higher, and its known upfront. OTOH, the recent survey value on my cat is nearly same as what it was in 2006 (when it was four years old). Sales prices back that up as well.

Hmmm, so 33 ft cat sails at same speed as 50 ft monohull. That's gotta be a bit embarrassing. But back to your original statements, when that 50 footer pulls into its US marina, its paying slip fee a lot higher than my 33 ft cat on an end tie. Mainsail, rigging, bottom paint, diesel maintenance (vs my dual outboards), topsides maintenance are all going to be a LOT more than cost of my shorter (albeit wider) cat. But it guess that is the cost to sail as fast as a cat.

Mediterranean. I saw +50% in Croatia and here is a +100%(!) example from Crete.

I plan to station my first boat in the Canaries where marina prices are directly proportional to the boat surface not the length.

"Over the pond" seems so, over here no "free lunch".

No.. he's saying its double the price for Cats.. its common where a Cat will take up 2 berths.. something that's 26ft wide is revenue = for two 13ft wide mono's.. no marina will give that space away.. unless they're half empty and desperate for revenue..

Who proved it and how was it proven? This sounds like rubbish. A gentleman with a fair amount of experience expressed his opinion. It sounds sensible but was not offered as a proof.

There are no proofs... only opinions.

I'm not seeing anything about beam in the price list, but I don't do well when the the magazines tells me to pick out six things different in two nearly identical photos.

I'll keep looking.

Well a 30ft ply cat did Cape Horn with a couple and their two kids on board.. that was in the 70's.. so guess things have moved on a bit.. also.. its not just the boat.. its the person sailing it..
