Just curious - what do you think they did wrong or could have done better?

Well lets see where we can help these two fellows.........

First an EPIRB or PLB would have helped.

The article ends with this qoute:

However, earlier in the article the men were qouted as saying this:

“We could see in front of us that it was turning dark, and we were going to try to run to that point and wait,” said Morton.

Well, if you can see it coming, it's not actually unpredictable. Sails should have been reefed and/or lashed down well before the leading egde of the squall hit.

Somehow I missed that the sails weren’t furled, I just read they were making a run for sheltered waters that happened to be in the same direction the storm front was coming from.

Yes, keeping the sails up was not the brightest

Current stage of my Gemini 105 MC,

Shonky repairer took 5 years to stuff around with my Hulls and never repaired them,

I sued him and got the contract lifted so I could get another repairer to repair my hulls,

The work was so shonky it had to be completely cut out and and new hulls Put in,

I am currently putting all the gear back in it, So I can put it back in the water,
The hulls have been beefed up from original, So it can be parked on sandy beaches with the tide out,

"It came out of nowhere" is right up there with "Hey everybody, watch this!"

The best safety feature I had sailing larger cats was a long apprenticeship on beach cats.
