Terrified - Anyone Hauled out at Tottenville NY?

Hello All!

Water in the sail drives forcing a haul out. Unfortunately, here in NJ there are no marinas that can haul our lucia 40 at 21.7 ft wide.

I'm terrifed.

Has anyone been hauled out at Tottenvile? They can haul out up to 22ft they say...

Any advice greatly appreciated!!

can't you just beach the boat between tides,the lipseals are pretty quick and easy to change?

It didn't occur to me that this would be an option. I'm not doing the work myself and we're not 100% positive it's just the seals. The mechanic plans on taking the unit off and taking back to their shop to reseal. Is that not normal?

Yes, the boat is in Atlantic Highlands and haven't been able to find another yard with a wide enough lift.

Thanks for the suggestino! Unfortunately, North River is 2 days away and with leaky seals(I hope), probably risky.

You don't need to take the sail drives off . Get anther opinion

North river is located in Nyack I believe, distance between Atlantic highlands and Nyack is less than 50 nm. Paying attention to the current mainly between the narrows and Tappan Zee I have made the trip in less than 6 hours. Considerably less than 2 days.

not sure what sail drive you have,but taking the leg off is a much bigger job,and will normally involve replacing the diaphrams as well, which should be done every 6-8 years.

changing lipseals is just a case of removing the prop,draining the oil and undoing 6-8 machine screws on the housing, sliding the housing off then pressing out the seals,replace seals and oring ,reassemble,fit prop and fill oil.

however if there has been water sitting in the drive legs there is a possibility of damage to the bearings,shaft and gears,plus it is way easier to do it in a work shop if there are stubborn bolts and will make damage inspection easier and they can order parts after disassembly.

just thought i would suggest drying out as an option if you were really stuck,have the lipseals and confident enough to do it

I might be nervous about "just fitting" in the space .. You might also ask what experience they'd have with your particular saildrive.

I had a similar situation with water in the saildrive lube and it turned out to only the underwater fill screw that was not-quite-tight-enough. You and we (me esp.) should all be so lucky again. All it took was a pressure test to find the problem.

However, about 10 years ago, I was asked to go up to Perth Amboy and oversee a prospective purchaser's survey of a 57' Swan that I'd captained previously. The yard where I found the boat berthed (Lockwood, I think) had 30 or 35T lifts and while the boat's specs said she was only 25T, I wanted MORE as I suspected much more weight with the Swaw. It was originally a very custom build with many fuel and water tanks than the the 'std." plus a centerboard and a ketch with add-ons such as custom boomkin/back deck.

She just seemed, also, so VERY big for the available lifts. I asked -- and was pointed to a yard at Tottenville.

Afterwards, I gave the yard there the highest marks I could give and wish I knew it now but there can't be many, many along that stretch. This one had a bunch of old broken off at-the-water pilings at the surface and I was given word to avoid them. The workers who came out to haul the Swan were dirty from head to toe too !! I found nothing to dislike there !

Port Washington has a marina capable of 22', Capri is the name I think. You can also go up to Haverstrand on the Hudson they can haul big cats Tottenville can also but it's not a great place

You may have done this already. Get oil drain pump and suck all the oil out, it should be in your user manual how to do this. See how much water actually comes out. If you are just worried about milky oil, it could be just a minor leak and need a new lips seal(s) as noted by previous poster or poor tightening of drain plug or drain plug gasket weeping. The correct marine grade oil will emulsify the water to a degree. Re-fill with fresh oil and motor the 50 miles to nearest haul out (use the good motor for most of the trip). If you leave at 5.am you will be there in ten hours at 5 knots.

It will be the seals, pulling the drive out is probably overkill, the bottom gears just lift out when you pull off the seal carrier, and you can inspect the lower unit easily through the opening.
