Spinnaker ?

Our MPS has just died. On our 44' Chamberlin cat we have greatly enjoyed downwind sailing. Just wondered, before we order a new MPS, whether other sailors have found greater joy in a symmetrical spinnaker or even the parachute sail on similar sized cats.

Re: Spinnaker?

We love the Assymetrical chute on Siesta because its a bit more versatile than a dead-down-wind only symm without a pole. Its big enough that the few extra square feet of a symm aren't missed. I don't want to screw with a pole (and carry the extra experienced crewman it would require).

Re: Spinnaker?

I fly my symetrical spinnaker without a pole, two downhaul lines are attached in the normal cat manner. I have heard good things about the "Parasailor" spinnaker.

Still looking for an assymetrical spinnaker / gennaker to give me more choices.

Thanks for that. Quote for new MPS just came in over $6000. Guess that's what boating is all about!

I also run a symetrical spinnaker. Quite easy to fly. I run a guy and a sheet to each tack/clew. Guys go through blocks on the bow and then to cleats. Sheets run back to turning block near stern quarter that leads to winches. Gives me a lot of control over the chute. With this configuration I can run very deep off the wind and up to a deep close reach.

Re: Spinnaker ?

There are advantages and disadvantages of both - main disadvantage of a assymmetrical is not being able to run as deep as with a symetrical..tho there are ways around that ..ie by bringing the tack to the windward pontoon..
Assymetricals can go deeper as breeze increases ..I can get to 165 degrees with mine in 20knots...
The plus is they are a much nicer sail when the wind gets tighter...
