Re: Speed to survive container colision?

All being said, the most you can do is be diligent, adhere to "The Rules of the Road" and don't fret beyond what you cannot control.

Safe Sailing

Re: Speed to survive container colision?

Saw a new Leopard 48 hauled out after it had a collision with a submerged concrete structure in the Delaware river, near the power station. The boat was apparently under full sail in a stiff breeze, so I guess 6 - 8 knots, it had pieces of fiberglass peeled off the hull, keels and rudders and sail drives all banged up, I think it took on some water but they made it under power 40 miles back to a haul out facility in MD.

Re: Speed to survive container colision?

Besides whole containers there are also large parts of containers floating around. We have found several big pieces on the beach here in the Bahamas. I think they were refrigerated containers because they have insulation on the inside that apparently keeps them afloat. Were these things broken when they came off the ship, broken by wave action later, or struck by another vessel?

This was almost a whole container washed up on Great Guana Cay and and now in the bush near the shore.

This piece of a container was on the larger north side beach of Conception Island.

Other big ugly things are floating around out there as well. This was on the beach at Shroud Cay.

All the pictures are from my wife's blog, Irish Eyes to the Bahamas

If are worried about hitting a container with your Catamaran,
an easy way to reduce your risk by 50% is...

sail a monohull.
