Shipping a cat to California

Really appreciate any experience or past research people have done regarding shipping a catamaran to California...from anywhere really, Asia/Pacific eastward or from the East Coast/Caribbean west. Catamaran inventory in California sucks, and I want to fully understand what buying elsewhere and shipping here might look like.

Re: Shipping a cat to California

I was told that two 38' cat owners paid $25,000 and $30,000 for shipping to the Seattle area from Florida. They may have had to pick up their boats in Vancouver, BC.

Re: Shipping a cat to California

Of course, cost really depends on the size, but there are a number of yacht transport companies using heavy lift ships that do this every day. Catamarans pose no special problems, they routinely handle superyachts with a beam probably wider than whatever catamarans you are thinking of buying!

The prices quoted by SandCrab are typical of what I have seen for a delivery from Fort Lauderdale to Vancouver. Because of US legal issues, you will not find any ships delivering from one USA port to another, hence the need for a Vancouver or Mexico delivery for USA East Coast originating yachts. However, coming from overseas, yachts can be offloaded most anywhere the ships are scheduled to have a port call.

One of the larger service is Seven Seas Yacht Transport. They are actually a kind of broker for these services, they don't own the ships.

Re: Shipping a cat to California

We shipped a 44' cat on DYT Yacht Transport from Australia to Ensenada, Mexico near San Diego California. Their ships are the kind of ship that sinks down in the water allowing you to motor the yacht on, then after the yachts are secured, the ship lifts up and the water drains away and the ship crosses the ocean in that format.

Here is the contact info. We had a very good experience.

Re: Shipping a cat to California

Working w/7 Seas now - both me and a buddy are shipping 51' cats to the East Coast from France - will let you know in a month how it goes - they have the FOFO (float on/off) and the lift types - we got lucky w/a FOFO.

After seeing the workout that my friends Outremer 4X received at the hands of a Delivery crew - I would definitely opt for shipping - the boat left FR w/less than 400 hrs on the motors and arrived with 800+ on each, and though it came back in good condition it had clearly been driven hard.
