I have noticed that few Cats have proper rubrails. Why is this?

Re: RUBRAILS! lack of
I noticed the PDQ 44 had a rubrail but it was not located all that well. Not sure how beafy those hulls on cats are for mounting such a thing?

Re: RUBRAILS! lack of
A Privilege 39 catamaran has rub rails, but I would never use them as such. I only want boat fenders on my rub rails.

Re: RUBRAILS! lack of
Rub rails on most cats are useless anyway...never in the right place due to all that freeboard.
Exception: I used to run a 50' commercial power cat the used 4x4" pine beams...now thats a rub rail ! Crush one, no problem, just bolt in a new one.

Re: RUBRAILS! lack of
Can't say about others, by the rub rails on the PDQ 32 and PDQ 36 would do a work boat proud. Use them every time I dock. They are at the widest part and well reinforced.
I could say the same thing about monos. The vast majority lack wisely placed rub rails, judging from the crazy docking rituals I see.
The reason in both cases are looks and cost, pure and simple. I'm pretty sure of that.

But you apparently haven't noticed that few mono's have proper rubrails. Why is this?

Re: RUBRAILS! lack of
Really, it is the superior seamanship of cat owners They don't drive around running into things, instead they dock so gently that a baby's kiss is more violent.

That's probably true, hard to damage things when your boat is upside down....

Re: RUBRAILS! lack of
Upside down, right side up, all the same to the true catamaran skipper. At least you're still on the top of the ocean. The mast in the water with the main up provides a great high-aspect fin keel, something that most cats don't have when right side up. Makes the docking even easier, although does get in the way of using some of the shallow anchorages.

I always thought it was because cats motorsail nearly 100% of the time.

Or maybe because the designers can't figure out where to put them, since the cat is as likely to be upside down as right side up.

No, it's only because cruising cat skippers want mini-keels instead of daggerboards All the designers know that daggerboards are better. And, with daggerboards, it doesn't matter if you are upside down or right side up, just the direction in which you lower the daggerboard changes. Upside down it just comes through the former deck and provides all the same lateral resistance as right side up. You just can't do that with a mini-keel.

Re: RUBRAILS! lack of
The builder did not fix one. That's why.
You can add one if you really want it. Except that I think on a big flat panel that many cat topsides are, you may actually add a stress/hard point by doing so.
Modern tall flat topside monos do not seem to have rub planks either btw.

The same reason few modern monos have them - aesthetics.
Let's not spoil the lines!
