Re: Round and Round in Circles

Maybe someone who is following this thread may know the answer to this one... I just looked through my jottings on positives and negatives on the Knysna 500 and I can't find the BdCl or bridgedeck clearance for them? A search on Google doesn't show anything and nor can I see it on the Knysna website... is this a bad omen?

I do not have an answer for you directly. I can only recommend that you email Rika Fouche at Knysna for the information. She has been quite helpful and responsive to us. They are a boutique builder and seem to have an ongoing relationship with all of their builds, including us even though we are the second owner.

It was brought up in an earlier post, BdCl is not a black and white hard set number. You may be over thinking the "numbers" of it all. I giggle when I think of it because during our boat search I had all kinds of spreadsheets and studied the numbers like it was a CPA exam. What it all came down to in the end was, when I got on the boat we purchased, it felt like home.

You've done an excellent job in picking out a handful of finalists...now go get on a few of them and find what feels right. Remember, no matter which one you choose there will be things you would like to change.

PS...If you are sailing into a pounding sea more than "occasionally" you're probably doing it wrong.

I had the kit cut by Exocetus in the UK, Exocetus Home There is also a 47ft version. Look at Sea-Tribe Catamarans – Luxury or Adventure – Choose your Catamaran! or Boat plans, yacht designs & boat kits from Dudley Dix Yacht Design & Boat Plans. You would be welcome to test sail once we have launched her in September/October. Patrick
Is that the Dix470 you’ll be building? Any info available for it?

Thanks,

That may be, but the 2008 Knysna 440 had 300mm BDEck clearance; that’s a huge consideration when all current designers recommend 30” minimum.

With regards,

Thanks,
I'd be interested in seeing the end result if they were. When i saw this post i went into the websites and had a good look. The Dix470 layout didn't suit us as it was as we only want 3 cabins and the galley would need to be bigger but I suppose that is the joy of having a cat built is that you can adjust it.

I'll be honest about being a bit nervous to order a boat made of ply, I just don't know enough about its reliability/longevity etc.

Heath,
Unless your insurance company balks (check first), I’d not worry as long as you’re using a reputable builder with a modern building process. Boats have been built with ply for many years, with lots still sailing. Just touch all bases.

No, we are building the DH550. Kevin from Exocetus would have the best info on the DH470 as he is building one & has also supplied some kits to others. I'm not certain but there may be two others being built. He could put you in touch with them as well.
