Rope around sail drive prop.

Hi all. I'm hoping before getting an engineer out someone here might be able to give me some ideas if I can fix this. A rope ended up around the port side volvo penta saildrive prop. I dove under once realised and got rid of the rope.

I haven't done much else but that prop isn't rotating now.

Any idea what to check and how to approach this?

Thanks

Re: Rope around sail drive prop.

Many saildrive props have a sacrificial rubber core, outboard props have them nowadays instead of shear pins. There are also dampers within the saildrive gearbox that could have gone.

Do you mean the prop is not moveable when rotated by hand ie seized or the engine is in gear and the prop doesn't go round?

Re: Rope around sail drive prop.

Hi. I can turn the prop by hand while under water. Just when I put it in gear lightly then no spinning. Sounds like gear box was engaging normally. Someone did tell me to try it in reverse as well... I only tried in forward before shutting engines off as didn't want to make it worse.

Is there some sort of gear alignment thing where is might just need to be run in reverse to get it back on track? Would have been very low revs when the rope got on it

Re: Rope around sail drive prop.

If the rubber bushing has failed, a new one can be pressed into the prop. You'd remove the prop, and then you can usually see how it failed. They sort of spin out, and then they're in two pieces instead of one. The prop is no longer connected to the output shaft.

Rope around sail drive prop.

These are fixed blade Volvo sail drive props. They are not spun out. You can remove yours and compare. But- be really careful removing as you could lose a little collar sleeve, or the hex head bolt, or other parts. And when you reinstall- make sure you use red locktite and crank that bolt on really hard without stripping. That’s all that keeps it on.

Edit- I tried to attach two photos but I don’t see them here.

2 fail possible
1 prop bushing
2 clutch

how test put saildrive in forward dive and try rotate prop if prop move but axe is fixed not moved .good prop fail. you are lucky only buy new prop 200-300€

if move axe and prop fail clutch good buy 2-3000 € depend your location.
