Question about outboard powered cats

Some cats have outboards in wells I’ve noticed, and this would seem to offer several advantages. But one question I have is that while I see how they raise and lower via ropes, I’m not clear how they will get locked in the down position so that you can use reverse. Do they have some sort of remote lock mech?

most small outboards have a small mechanism you flip.

Re: Question about outboard powered cats

The outboards in wells usually only move vertically. In that case you just keep the outboard tilt locked and raise and lower it along a track.

Ours has the black aluminum tube in the picture that lowers and fits into the pod. Very sophisticated!

And the knots are to die for! It was thrown together in a rush and left that way as it seems to work.

Re: Question about outboard powered cats

Seawind 1000 had a heavy stainless hinge mount for the Yamaha 9.9s. It also had a latch that locked when the motor was fully down. When you raised it, first you had to release the latch with a small trip line. It was very simple system that worked extremely well.

Re: Question about outboard powered cats

Mine slide up and down vertically not on an arc. The current ones have hydrologic tilt for a small amount of adjustment. The old outboards just had a fixed tilt and slid up and down on the same tracks as the new ones do now.

On my PDQ32 i drilled a hole in the latch for a small line that I ran down to a small pulley and then up and out the side of the housing where I attached a 1 inch diameter ball. To release the engines you just had to pull on the ball. When they drop down they latch automatically. It was simple and worked well.

Here is a pic of the SW1000 setup, looking down. You can see the trip line for the latch, with the light line on the right. The heavy bracket sides are going down to the motor mount. At the top of them, on each side, it pivots. The motor stays locked in place on the bracket - so you don't have to depend on its tilt mechanism.

Second pic shows the attachment plate for the outboard.

Re: Question about outboard powered cats

9.9hp high thrust on a 30ft cat here. No lowering pod or anything fancy - the outboard just lowers and locks in place (as per usual outboard), and then tilts up and locks (with a securing line to ensure it doesn’t drop).

Simple!
