Props for 9.9 on Seawind 1000
Has anyone got the information for the most appropiate props to fit onto 9.9 Yamaha powering a Seawind 1000.
I am purchasing new Engines (Feb 2020) and want to make sure I also get the correct props.
Thanks
Geoff

Re: Props for 9.9 on Seawind 1000
I would look for the lowest pitch large diameter that is made for the engines. Sometimes referred to as a work prop rather than by pitch.
We swapped out a 40hp on our gemini with what was something like a 14in pitch to a 25hp with a 10in pitch work prop and found we had so much more thrust even with less hp. You aren't going to do 25kt, so you don't have to worry about the revs going too high.

When I replaced the engine on my Cal I also replaced the old 2 blade fixed prop with a 3 blade Max Prop. I used Gerr's handbook to calculate which prop to select and the pitch to set the prop to. I have been very pleased with my choice and have not needed to change the pitch from what I originally calculated. You will most likely have far fewer options for propellers for an outboard, however you could learn much from this book.

As Tin Tin says, if your purchasing the Yamaha 9.9 hi thrust keep the prop that comes with.

Re: Props for 9.9 on Seawind 1000
I would keep the props however it seems outboard motors nowdays do not come with props. FWIW, the new 9.9 only comes with power tilt, I don't want power tilt as it is just somethings else that will eventually break, if I don't want I have to pay them to remove if only after I purchase the new engine. That's the Australian marine industry, charge the punter, they will pay. This my reason in asking which is the most appropiate prop.
Thanks
Geoff

Are you planning on purchasing a standard motor rather than the high thrust model?

Re: Props for 9.9 on Seawind 1000
Hight thrust, extra long shaft 9.9, straight out of the playbook, it is just a replacement because current motors are 2008, playing up a bit and I don't want the stress and at 2500 hours so as far as I am concerned time to move on. I am expecting quieter running (not that the old ones are all that loud), and better effeciency. At the same time replacing tanks as current ones are original (2000) and fuel lines etc. Already replace throttles and cables. Birthday present for my wife Cheers

When I did it last year I bought the tiller model which comes with manual tilt and put on the remote kit ($50). Sold the tiller on ebay.

I can't comment on the Seawind 1000, but have the T9.9 on my Maine Cat 38 with 7" pitch and they don't reach full RPM. On the Maine Cat owners forum a guy running a Maine Cat 30 said he played around with various props and got the best performance with the ~5" pitch. You'll have to extrapolate that to your boat. While there is a tendency to go for a large pitch to get more speed, at higher RPMs they slip too much and just turn the water into a milkshake. As others have said, you want the max diameter that will fit.
Here you go, it's 11 3/4 x 5 3/4

Re: Props for 9.9 on Seawind 1000
Just replaced my 2008 Seawind 1000XL engines after one developed a leak in the oil pan.
My wife wanted the power tilt but it will not fit.
The dealer bought the tiller model T9.9XWHB, removed the tiller and used the electric choke and remote hardware from the old engine.

Re: Props for 9.9 on Seawind 1000
We have 2x 9.9 high thrust Yamahas 2014&2015.
Both with the "remote kit" as described.
One thing which really sucks is that stupid plastic leaver. It already broke once and is bound to break again.
The older version accepted the gear shift cable under the hood. Much much better.
The engine casing of the newer version such as ours even still have the recess for the cable to pass through. Still, Yamaha does not offer that modification. Must be cheaper for them.
I hope to modify that next year myself.
Does anybody already have a good fix for this?
What's the best way to fully block the engine permanently from turning? We used Dyneema lines. Works OKish.

Re: Props for 9.9 on Seawind 1000
Best way to fix engine in place so it won’t move that I can think of is to connect a rod to it just like remote steering does and fix the other end of this rod to a bracket, that way it should still tilt up etc.
I’d still grease it and rotate it yearly though or it will seize, and don’t forget to grease and screw those attachment screws in and out at least twice a year, and leave them coated in grease, or they too will seize.

It will fit - just needs a bit of engineering. More than one boat here has done the update
