Privilege 37... worth this much?

Hi everyone. I've been looking at mainly lagoon 380s and 400s, all in Croatia seemingly, for around the 200k gbp mark. I then found this privilege 37 for 175k and its a lot closer to home!

https://www.yachtworld.co.uk/yacht/1996-privilege-37-owners-version-8204387/

Question is that being 1996 is it worth that much? I'd like some opinions as it seems to have lots of extras which is good but some of the lagoons are 15k more and 2013 to 2015.. although they would be ex charters.

This also appears to be ex-VAT. Were are you going to keep this yacht, in Europe?

The Privilege is a Mercedes/Rolls Royce, the Lagoons are Fords….my opinion of course and nothing wrong with Fords, just a difference in quality.

I’d offer 160,000 and jump on it if they accept. We’ll updated and cared for, it seems. Get a surveyor…

Re: Privilege 37... worth this much?

From the photos it looks like a nice bunch of electrical gear, and seems nicely done up inside. It depends on what you and you better half want particularly if you are going to live aboard for any length of time. Basically all these style of cruising boats sail pretty much the same, they use same style rigging, deck gear, engines, etc etc where the older ones differ is in layout. Despite the practical arguments for a galley down, most people want the galley in the saloon. Next is sleeping arrangements. Depending on your age, you need to try getting in and out of the beds, imagine doing it every day, getting up for a bathroom visit in the night and then imagine changing the sheets etc. The next is trip hazards around the deck, where the helm is located, where the traveller runs, how to access the cockpit and if the engines are separated from the cabin. If you are considering going to the tropics those front windows will need strong sunshades. An old Mercedes sedan might be the same price as a newer Ford SUV, but which will suit your planned lifestyle. For a week-ender or a week at a time I doubt it will make much difference and so go for the lower cost but get a survey done for structural integrity of hull and rig.

Re: Privilege 37... worth this much?

Thanks for all the input, helps a lot!

Interesting analogy with the Mercedes/Rolls Royce thing - I'll use that one

I just saw a couple of other about after searching and they were in the lower 100k range (https://www.yachtworld.co.uk/yacht/1...ge-37-8194307/) , which I would expect from a boat made in 1996 - Do you guys think this one is more just because of all the extras on board then? And if a boat is from 1996 rather than say 2013, is that something to be worried about? Or if a survey checks out fine the year is really not important at all?

I'm from Guernsey so it's no vat here, but the reason I'm getting it is a tiny flat here is like £350k these days so I'm giving up and going to live on the boat and try and escape for winters if possible.

Quite a nervy feeling so i'm trying to make sure I'm not buying something that's going to fall apart as soon as i get it really!

Re: Privilege 37... worth this much?

That looks a great boat. Of course I'm biased towards Privilege having owned one for 12 years, but, as others have mentioned, they truly are a different class from Lagoon. Looks as though everything has been sensibly updated. The only 1996 part of that boat is likely to be the hull, mast and boom, and they should all last forever.

The one in Raiatea is a great price but not in the most convenient location for you. I'd be tempted by that one as I'd love to be back in French Polynesia but, to be honest, it would probably cost you the price difference to get that one up to the standard of the St. Helier boat.

Do get a survey to reassure yourself but the only problem Privileges usually have is water damaged woodwork and that is all visible!

Re: Privilege 37... worth this much?

If you want to save money, buy the tiny flat. It will appreciate at 6?% per annum, whereas the boat will lose value at a greater rate and cost more to run.
Good Luck.

175K £ is 205K €

According to the l'Argus du bateau, a French website that collects boat prices, the Privilege 37 should have a price range between 84K € and 108K €
Does this reflect the actual crazy market and/or the state of the boat ? I don't know.
So, you need to find out why the asking price of that boat is so high. Was it refitted lately ? are you willing to pay for that ?
If you like the boat and don't mind overpaying, buy it.

Otherwise, take a look at this video, I think this boat had some damage in the past and it was repaired.

Re: Privilege 37... worth this much?

This looks like a very well kept boat. The boats resin was done in 1996 yet this boat has been updated a lot. Privileges are excellent boats, worth over some others, but this boat has a lot of new gear worth a lot of money. I cannot tell you the absolute minimum but it looks very good, new instruments, new engines, etc.

Re: Privilege 37... worth this much?

Looking at those pictures and the intended use I would definitely go for the Lagoon. The boat in those pictures show the age of the design. If it were my money and I was looking for a liveaboard it would be the most liveable.

Re: Privilege 37... worth this much?

scargo - interesting to see that video! I'm actually flying over to Jersey today to see it.

I do know that the owners were planning on taking this boat on world trips and have upgraded and kitted it out with that in mind, it seems to

Budget is a factor and the lagoon was gonna be £208k, I think they would take an offer on the privilege 37, Maybe £160k, or you guys think even lower? If I can get the main areas verified to be in seaworthy shape then I think the extra price is mainly due to all the stuff they've added. Listed below - it's a lot! Also fairly new engines with 640 hours on.

If I'm looking at it today what should I be looking out for on this boat? I have a surveyor next week but if you guys have any tips of what i should try and spot let me know.

That Bill guy has another walk around of it from 2011

Looks like they literally refitted it completely over the last 10 years

Re: Privilege 37... worth this much?

Interesting videos. Shows the one Privlege Achilles Heel I mentioned in my previous post, water damaged wood. Catch the leaks early and you can stop it happening. Ignore it and you can see the result in the first video. Nothing you can do except put new veneer on or as Bill said, paint it! The guy doing them, Bill Bullimore, was the Privilege agent for the UK. Sold and helped me spec my 435 brand new back in 2002. As well as being a broker, he was also a qualified surveyor so knows what he was talking about. Retired now I believe.

Re: Privilege 37... worth this much?

That's pretty crazy! Might try and ping bill a message and see if can chat with him about what was done to the Hull. If these guys fitted it out as they have I imagine no expense was spared on the most important structural bits....

I think looking at the before video and after photos they also replaced all interior wood and sealed those windows which seems to be a main issue with these boats
