Predict Wind Data Hub
PredictWind is having a Black Friday sale and I wanted to pick the forum's expertise as to the pros or cons of Predict Wind's Data Hubs usage and if I really would find it advantageous since I have an operational Starlink. Happy Thanksgiving Cruisers.

Re: Predict Wind Data Hub
We've been happy with it; we mainly use it for our Predictwind tracking page after switching from Iridium to Starlink last year. We also have used it for USB tethering our phones, when not using Starlink. It's nothing fancy but has worked fine.

Re: Predict Wind Data Hub
I'm happy with mine, predict wind package but starlink used too much power to leave on 24/7.
I used an iridium go for the tracking only and as a backup to starlink.
I'm on a 41 with 630w solar fyi.

Just as a tip in case it wasn't obvious: We have the same limits with Starlink power consumption. When in cell range (90% of the time even in Bahamas/Carib) we use our phones, usb tethered to the datahub, to provide internet connectivity for tracking. Works great.
cheers - Dan

True that, but not the same on the west coast US. Get about 30 miles out or even less there's no cell conection. Even remote parts of Catalina have non.

Re: Predict Wind Data Hub
Thanks to all thus far. Much appreciate your thoughts. Has anyone generated Polars thru the use of the data hub? Any experience with this aspect of Data Hub/Predict wind?

Pay for our PW Pro subscription and we’ll let you know! Internet AIS is another great Pro feature.
We have a DataHub on a PW STD subscription and use it mostly for position tracking and as a backup router. There is a remote anchor alert function that is released but doesn’t yet work - that will be a great once they do get it working.

Re: Predict Wind Data Hub
Starlink v2 uses a lot of power. v3 is even worse.

Re: Predict Wind Data Hub
Appreciated everybody feedback. Despite my Starlink v2 power consumption, I believe I can still utilize it for position tracking on predict wind. I have polars that I use for the time being. Power is not a critical factor at this time on my vessel, so i think I'm going to pass on the data hub this year. When the remote anchor alert or other innovations come online, I may reconsider. See you on the water. Thanks LAGERTHA

Re: Predict Wind Data Hub
We have the PW Hub, wish we would have paid less, but really it's a surprisingly good deal at full retail. The GOTCHA is the PRO annual price. I really like the Internet AIS feature. We have used the generated polars, but not enough to make a fair judgement yet. We have been holed up in Rio Dulce Guatemala since May. One thing of note is using our Starlink underway can add up $. But we like sharing AIS contacts we have with the rest of the world.

Our V2 dishy uses 31W average. That’s not a lot of power for us, but perhaps it is for you. Get a Mini instead - 10-12W apparently.

Cheyne. If I could ask you...your 12/48v converter for your starlink...how many amps did you need (for your transformer) to run starlink at its full capacity?

Re: Predict Wind Data Hub
I'm using a Mean Well 12v to 48v power supply. I have a 5 amp fuse in line from the 12v. The Mean Well allows you to dial the voltage up and down. On the stock power supply Starlink lists 53v so I dialed my Mean Well to 53v to match. It has been running full time since August this way. I hover around 31 to 33w average in the Starlink app. I'm using the stock router as it works just fine. When I had the v2 I used a third party router.
Adding: Just check and in the last 24 hours the high for watts in the app was 64w. The low was 19w. I have yet to find a rhym to reason for high and low. The low was while I was watching the Iowa basketball game streaming last night and the high was a 3am. 3am might have been a patch from Starlink since that is about the time they like to patch I have found.

Re: Predict Wind Data Hub
The OP did not ask about Starlink, they asked about the Datahub.
I have used the Datahub extensively and I am disappointed. It is buggy and unstable. It will NOT maintain remote access ports for monitoring NMEA instruments. The user interface is a mess and the internal response time on the UI is maddeningly slow. I worked with the great people at PW on diagnosing and debugging problems with the Datahub and after 14 months I am exasperated by the Datahub. It should be considered a beta product, not ready for full release.
