Pre purchase inspection france

Hi guys.
I am in negotiations to buy a lagoon 440 in France. I have received a quote for a pre purchase inspection (marine survey). It seams to be high compared with what I would expect to pay in Australia. Has anyone got any advice on what they would consider average or reasonable for a 44 foot catamaran.

Thanks in advance

John.

I'd venture a guess that the survey should cost you around $600-700 USD.

That's not a very comprehensive list of stuff checked. For the sort of money you are being asked to pay I'd want sea trial so the engines could be checked running under load and then I'd want the boat hauled (at my additional expense) to check hull and saildrives etc.

If the boat is in France why English pounds? Are they UK based?

I agree with this. We also rely very heavily on pre purchase inspections in the aviation industry and you normally get what you pay for. Don't try to save here.. It can save you lots in the future!

If they don't haul out the boat, how should he inspect the hulls outside and do a humidity test?
So I would think, that it includes also an out of water procedure.
My question is, why choose a UK based surveyor and no one local, if the boat is in France?
I suspect the price also includes travel expanses?

Re: Pre purchase inspection france

And, this is quite a mess here...

Let's be sure to compare apples with apples.

OP is looking to survey modern cat in France.

- next post from Santa Cruz suggests it should cost 600 USD (currency is already wrong, and this seems like fantasy land...)
- OP then quotes a post in GBP so probably OP buyer is GBR and looking to buy in FRA
- NB: the world doesn't always revolve around the USA...
- Is this a local surveyor or are you paying travel expenses too?
- Is the surveyor experienced (or perhaps even acknowledged as an expert) in this type of vessel?)
- sometimes a non qualified but highly experienced person may provide profoundly useful but unknown info
- did you already read every single forum post regarding your proposed vessel? Even those in a foreign language?

Or, did your surveyor do all of this for you?

Be informed please. I would not come to survey your boat for 600 USD unless this was some type of friends and family discount, or maybe just an "expert opinion" instead of a proper full survey.

OP, please educate yourself before committing yourself to anything.

And, PS: there are a few full time marine surveyors on the forum here who even if they may be in another part of the world will probably be sufficiently professional to still offer a short list of their standard terms and rates.

Any professional business should be open and clear to do this. Serious professionals have nothing to hide.

I (before my retirement from doing such jobs) would not do survey of L440 for less than $1,200. Depending on actual age of the vessel it would possibly be more...
The work/price would include assessment of all the underwater parts (humidity, props, rudders, shafts or seadrives etc.)

Re: Pre purchase inspection france

We recently (2months ago ) had a 47 mono surveyed in Scotland , local surveyor and cost was £900 including inspection after haul . Good value at that . So if u add travel and possibly an overnight if it is a uk surveyor , then your quote might be close . I’d look for a local surveyor who speaks/writes good English ...

It doesn't make sense to spend £300k ++ on a boat and then fight over $300!? Or what am I missing here?

Re: Pre purchase inspection france

Here in Australia I charge $25 a foot for a survey. I surveyed a Lagoon 440F in Fiji and the cost was the same plus travel. For £1750 pounds you could fly me to France and get the boat surveyed. Surely they have put some “Tourist” tax on the quote?
I noticed the surveyor checks the rig, is that good enough for the insurance company or do they need a riggers certificate? Here in Australia they need a rigger to check the mast etc.
I am curious how the surveyor does hull moisture readings?
Cheers
