Re: Performance catamarans to consider at 400k or below

Exactly, have a look at some old videos from https://www.youtube.com/@SailingLifeonJupiter
and you will see that the galley is not in the cellar on the Mumby 48.

Totally agreed. I generally prefer galley up, but the Mumby's galley really is very good. It's totally open to the saloon, so it's light and airy, with direct line of sight to the saloon and the helm.

Mine is the same. What other use can you make of the hull? If there are only two people on board .... 4 heads and 4 berths??? In fact I have my dinette adjacent to my galley in the stern of the starboard hull, leaving the the brdige-deck free for a comfortable spacious lounge instead of cramped upright seating dominated by a kitchen. Galley up for charter where the priority is sleeping accommodation. Galley down for maximum living space for live-a-board.

Well that dinette is cave and cellar at its finest, worse then in many monohulls. The rest of the galley down i cannot see how open it is.
I partly agree with the mumbay galley that's really wide open and acceptable. Still prefer galley up and >48ft there is definitely enough space in the salon for a U-galley up (with the freezer and additional fridges in the hulls) with a breakfast bar and a proper living room. Smaller yes galley down if open like in munbay is the better choice.

The other hull stern guest cabin with head plus backup where i can sleep when I need to work in the owner hull or crew or the admiral has her crazy days... Midship storage/household with washing maschine/freezer...and wet locker (head transfered) and bow a workshop.

I believe Tupaia’s Shuttleworth came in either an open bridgedeck or bridgedeck configuration. Pretty sure his is the bridgedeck configuration so with both galley and dinette down this leaves the full bridgedeck open to the salon, and on a 28’ beam that’s a huge space.
We’ve owned both galley up and galley down, and both my wife and I prefer galley down. Galley up makes no sense to us until you get 50’ plus, and even then a waste of space.

The 431 is low volume and not prey to the same failings, but old plastic bots need love too…especially ones that can sail relatively quickly.

$40k would be too high for a 431, but I was thinking a larger boat. That said, new diamond rig, plus yard time and crane, and yard pricing, and running rigging, and a reaching sail, and the reaching sail’s furling system, and and and…those “and’s” add up is all I’m saying.

I just splashed a few days ago, all of ZERO people I spoke with spent thousands less than anticipated that came for legitimate work…that’s boats.

But it is a Buyer’s market, and I’d love to sail that 431 ;-)
Fully agree, need maintenance and the one of my buddy had 200k put in the last 5 years by former owner.
A 431 can sail a lot just with genua and main, 2x 1000Euro downwind round sail (8 and 11m) and a big code zero that does 50 till 150 is all you need as sail wardrobe on a 431.
Sure replace the crossmember bolts plus the mounting bracket, put 2 or 3 layers kevlar on to re-enforce the area and a big 5mm thick SS chainplate installed and that's done...had that done on my Lavezzi which was in total 1200Euro incl. the rig work and 431 is actually less effort as easier to reach, mounting bracket much easier to take off and more even in the crossmember area. My buddy gets this done on the 431 as well as by recommendation of the same surveyor that recommended to do it on mine too. Bolts didn't look too good with slight corrosion damage on the 431, so just do it right and complete.Cheap effective insurance that won't be a problem in the next 10-20 years in this high stress area.

Do you know why catana actually painted all aluminum hardware, that's always a major thing on every catana I checked for him that all that parts had slight corrosion damage and need regular repainting. My Lavezzi is 2005 build and alu crossmember plus mounting brackets are absolutely fine just anodized and that's mass production made to money while old catana is high-end where best was just good enough.
