Yep that was them. 4 guys, one girl. We were really impressed with how much stuff they had onboard - computers etc and managed to keep it all dry . She got all nicely dressed up one night, complete with high heels to go out on the town.

Re: Perfect sized catamaran for ocean sailing is 40ft!
I have been to sea in vessels from 32ft to 215ft. The best rough water vessel I have ever been in is my 39ft Prout Escale cat. It is also easily handled by one person. Pity it doesn't sail that well.
The length issue is probably just coincidental.

Yep, I feel sorry for the poor people that would be forced to live with a boat like that.
I came in to Nantucket one night late and anchored amongst some boats like that and larger outside the harbor. The people on them seemed extremely festive. Those folks did not seem sick, though I am sure that they were in the morning or whenever they woke up. Only one person fell overboard while I was still up. The crew already had a launch in the water for such contingencies.

this were charter boats would be my guess. Who would want crew to rob you of privacy, except if you are sick or chartering for money ?

This reduces hobby horsing, increases waterline length and hence speed and enables more weight to be carried without as much penalty. Sail sizes etc remain the same so there is no increase in effort.

I was going to be surprised if you weren't well aware of them.
When I did a Yachtmaster course many years ago, the instructor referred to them as "Examiner Aboard" day shapes as that was the only time you'd see them.

Re: Perfect sized catamaran for ocean sailing is 40ft!
As a 40ft (ish) catamaran owner, I think it's a good size.
FP Mahe 36' is about the smallest you can get the traditional catamaran layout in, but it doesn't have the load carrying capacity of a slightly larger model.
Of course if you have a performance oriented boat, then you need longer just to have the same living space.
Everyone is different but on average a 40 ft cat is a great size to have relative to price to purchase/maintain/upgrade.
