Most of my clients need 40hr or so underway to be ready if they have the aptitude 4) Opt for coverage for your local waters first, then add on more as you cruise. My personal favorite US brokerage is IMIS/Gowrie; they write world wide coverage via Markel and other providers as well as coastal and inland coverage. Another option is BoatUS, currently underwritten by GEICO and, in my opinion, a bit more lax on underwriting requirements but no world wide option. Good luck but don't wait, start building the professional relationship now so you have the broker acting as your agent; that's their job...

Geico and BoatUS have parted ways. Geico is no longer selling policies through agents and Geico is not renewing many/most/all policies sold through agents.

I got my Geico/BoatUS cancellation notice this month.

Re: Newbie insurance question

John, are you sure? Both BoatUS and Geico's websites still reference a marketing agreement.

If you want to make a statement on CF, go ahead make it under your name. Don't edit what I said and leave it as a quote from me.
