New Square Top Main

Fitting, had to make new battens then fit them.

Under sail:

So far, pretty impressed. Seems to be very forgiving in terms of trim, very easy to keep the leech open in light wind, great drive out of tacks.

Have only had very light breeze, and very shifty, so haven't really tried pointing as high as possible. Sails nicely at 30' AWA though.

(I fully realise new sails were a waste of money, given that we motor 4000% of the time, but they look nice, don't they?)

Re: New Square Top Main

And judging by your waterline on your port hull it looks like you are about to flip, better off just motoring in big seas like that.

Just kidding but I figured it's bound to come up.

Looks great, have fun.

Already flipped, we were coming up for another one. The fully gimballed interior works great. Flip at least 50 times a mile and never even notice it.

Re: New Square Top Main

Really Nice looking main. How old were the old sails? Out of shape or just wanted a bit more zip?

Nice sail! Tell us about the "making up of new battens." Did you lay them up yourself?

Thanks,

Sails were 6 years old, but had done 27,000 miles. Jib was stretched a bit, getting hooked in the leech, and bits starting to fall off the main. A seam had split at the second reef point too.

Could probably have gotten a couple more years out of them, but getting these fully battened mains on and off is a big hassle, so decided I'd rather just bite the bullet and only have to do it the once (hopefully) for another 6 + years.

No, I had to make (cut from a coil of fibreglass batten) a new bottom batten as it was longer than any of the battens in the old sail, then move all the others up one slot, which meant measuring and cutting them all to length. Also this sail has one additional batten.

Yeah, can't get good help these days!

Actually you can, the guys were great, it would have been a hell of a job for one bloke. All 3 of us were pretty stuffed at the end of the day.
