it is nice seawind shows some videos but 5 min stretch as an evidence that boat a is faster than boat b is a bit unconvincing.

Also, can you next time show actual speeds, wind, wake so one gets better idea of speed potential and to exclude currents, fiddling with speedo, picking surfing on the wave, etc.

Read lots of words on CF about Seawind potential but no single video yet to see it in action.

I looked through the Polars. With 12 knots TWS and 60 TWA here is the (rough, approximate) boatspeed data:

1. Seawind 1600 10.2 knots
2. Excess 12 8.0 knots (pulse line)
3. Excess 11 7.6 knots (pulse line)
4. Excess 12 7.5 knots (std rig)
5. Excess 11 7.3 knots (std rig)

Can't find any data for the 1160. I think all manufacturers should put stuff like this on their public web sites.

The Seawind persons commented that they had the wrong sail up, so they could have gone faster, I assume, according to themselves.

Re: New Excess Catamaran Brand

So what you are saying is a 51'6" LWL cat is faster than at 37'7" LWL cat? No doubt a Seawind is faster than an Excess, but a slight contributing factor might be 14 feet more waterline. (I know the smaller Seawind was also catching them). Checking those polars of above they all compare favorably with a monohull of similar length.

Re: New Excess Catamaran Brand

1600 is pointing higher, crossing the XCS12 stern to pass on her windward side, with boards only half down (very shallow bay), with 14+ people aboard, full tanks and new owner’s gear aboard, including 3.9 meter tender. A potential buyer, unfamiliar with the boat, has the helm and we only have main and self tacking jib out. Meanwhile, the XCS 12 is lightship, with 3 crew. If we wanted to pass the XCS 12 really fast, we’d have run parallel to her, hoisted a larger headsail, and had someone at the helm with prior 1600 sailing experience, plus more typical crew complement and load.

I am not saying seawind isn’t a faster boat. No idea but assume so.

But, not that impressive a video given a much hotter angle being sailed by the seawind and still didn’t pass them in first video despite lots of talk. Unless I am reading wind direction the excess was at a broad reaching angle and the seawind heated up onto a close reach. So unless they stayed on parallel course to the other cat not much can be concluded

Re: New Excess Catamaran Brand

Yachting World just had an interesting article on the Excess 15 and brand in general. Given the magazine is advertising funded, pretty damning article. Bottom line, according to them, is that they are essentially Lagoons with different helm position (several models ARE Lagoon hull molds), made lighter, but because Lagoons are relatively heavy, don't end up lighter than other production cats and try to make up for it by putting up more sail area. Also, fully equipped in performance configuration a bit pricey.
