There are a couple of owners videos of the 1190 with screacher up doing wind speed.

I will look at the excess11 at the boat show">Miami boat show. The mast position vs the 12 is different.

In what direction? We can set our (admittedly) very old Dacron screecher and reach true wind speed in 3-9 knots TWS. While our AWA is 34-35 degrees the TWA is from 65-70 degrees. Not so good for going upwind.

Oh what I’d give for a laminate screecher. Item 12 on our capital replacement list, so at least another year, sigh.

I just looked up one of the chartplotter pics on the owners group. 9.0 knots speed over ground, 9.1 knots speed thru water, 9.0 knots true wind speed, 60 deg AWA, 120 TWA (?), double slot with screecher and jib up. The 1190 sails are some kind of synthetic, black - the stock sails that come with the boat. Thats about hull speed for a 39 ft boat, although it will go faster when planing. There was another post doing 9 knots sog in 10 knots tws, but as you know current can have a positive effect there (albeit owner said none). According to several owners, they have sailed at tws, with screacher, which is probably always on a reach.

Re: New Excess Catamaran Brand

I think the L380 is faster than both the 11 and 12.
For sure the 12, and probably the 11 too.

Would you happen to have some decent polar diagrams for the L380?

Anyway, using rough manual estimates, here's what I got compared to Excess 11.

8 knots of TWS:

TWA 50
- Excess 6.6 knots
- L380 2.1 knots (!!)

TWA 60
- Excess 6.9 knots
- L380 3.1 knots

TWA 90
- Excess 7.2 knots
- L380 3.9 knots

TWA 120
- Excess 6.7 knots
- L380 5.2 knots

16 knots of TWS

TWA 50
- Excess 7.7 knots
- L380 4.8 knots

TWA 60
- Excess 8.1 knots
- L380 6.5 knots

TWA 90
- Excess 8.2 knots
- L380 8.2 knots (!!)

TWA 120
- Excess 8.4 knots
- L380 10.1 knots (!!)

The Excess polars are with the pulse rig: mainsail, jib, code0. The L380 apparently with mainsail, genoa and gennaker.

What's striking about the diagrams is that the Excess 11 is roughly between 7-9 knots all over the chart, while the L380 goes all the way to 13.5 (with the gennaker).

Since they are using different sail options, I guess the broad reaching part is only roughly comparable.

Below is a link to a Seawind 1160 and a Seawind 1600, each with quite a few passengers and gear aboard, closing with a new XCS12 following the 2020 Boat Show in 15 knots wind.

Would have loved to see the speed they did.
But this shows, that it does not help to put spoilers aka outside steering positions on a condo to make it sportier...
