I'm going back thru some older ideas/designs/etc looking for ideas to consider in designing an alternative fishing-sailing cat for Jimmy Buffett in lieu of that monohull he is having built.
I'll preface this by saying I know nothing about boat design, so this may not be feasible or the physics might not work. But......

I've always thought that small retracting foils in the hulls of a cat would be an amazing design idea. Not big enough to fly a hull, but big enough to provide some lift to lessen the apparent weight and increase the speed potential. Along with a set of daggerboards or centerboards of some kind to decrease leeway. You could use both foils when going downwind and the leeward foil on other points of sail (along with the windward centerboard/daggarboard). If you used the leeward foil it would also theoretically give some capsize protection too.

Re: New design - opinions / idea's wanted

Okay. can't believe it's been 10 years that I originally posted on this.
So still in design phase, 3/4 job moves 1 degree, 2nd in progress, house purchase, rebuild of 2 cars, 3rd in progress and 2 motorbikes have all held things up a bit.

So the last few years has mainly been spent researching a variety of designs and going and looking at current boats. Plan is to spend next 5 years fully CADing up the design and talking to professional designers.

Design has changed to a strip plank built design with 2 Outboard motors to begin with but package and infrastructure protecting for a possible electric propulsion system at a later date. Due to build location being in the centre of England I'm still looking at doing a modular design that will allow me to transport parts to coast easier. Bulkheads and interior joinery will be CNC machine cut to speed the build up. Sticking to the A-frame mast concept. Realistically build isn't likely to start for another 5-6years, but then I hope to be able to get the build done over a 4-5 year period, probably going to be told that's optimistic.

Why don't you have a look at these kit boats being built there in England. might get you going a lot quicker.

Re: New design - opinions / idea's wanted

Dudley Dix designs is where I first started looking at building my own boat. I even got to the stage were I'd bought a set of plans (Vickers 45C) and got it all CAD'ed and got a place for building it lined up. Then upon researching the various cruising area's and reading more up I changed my mind to a Catamaran. At the time I think the DH550 was just being drawn up and hull 1 getting built. Think I even got some pictures from Dudley Dix Design when I emailed to say I was thinking of switching.

I've looked at the Exocetus website numerous times and the building blog that pre-dated it. These are probably my plan b/c, as I like the layout of the boat, I would look to see if I could get just the Hulls and Bridgedeck floor though, as I just don't like the Bridgedeck top design. I don't know why as I like the boat just not for me if that makes sense.

I'm pretty sure the builders of that kit might make allowances for a 'partial kit'. In fact I think they have the kit broken down into stages of purchase.

That deckhouse shape has grown on me, and aerodynamically it makes sense. The combo steps/sunshades up front also make sense to limit solar gain to that deckhouse area,...maybe not so important there in England, but definitely so in many tropical areas.
