Hi Jim
Not if you follow the following link The Practical Mariner's Book of ... - Google Book Search

In fact if you google name changing a boat, there are a lot of good bits of info.

Cheers
Ian

It's not bad luck if the Admiral makes you change the name. See Laws of the Sea chapter 6 section 47 "Name Changes - The rule of the Admiralty". Bottom line: "the Admiral is always right". Local traditions normally will cover the ceremony minimum requirements. Quantities of strong drink are purchased by the Captain (that would be you) for those that attend.

You may be able to file the name change as part of your new registration with appropriate fees. Removal of the old name should be complete before the ceremony and the new name may then be applied after the ceremony provided the drink has not created a situation where you can't see straight. In that event the next day is appropriate.

Poseidon laid down the rules for just this situation. The old name must be expunged from the records, (Poseidon's) and the new name must be entered. Of course there are very specific guidelines for removing the old name. Incantations and such.

This link will explain it all.

Boat re-naming ceremony - Nautical Know How

All seriousness aside it sounds like great fun and a reason to drink and enjoy boating.
We are having a renaming ceremony here this coming friday. We will be doing it pierside of course so we can drink too much and not have to worry about DUI ....Docking Under the Influence.

I thought it was safe if you are a new owner and have never sailed it, But you must remove anything to to with the old name first.
