Multihull Dynamics Compares Catana 42 and Lagoon 440

Yes a useful site for a preliminary heads up . One thing that could be added is load capacity. Some would like to know what load can be carried (i.e Maximum Displacement - Lightship). The difference between a Catana 42 and a Lagoon 440 would be a large number.


The comparison between the Seawind 1600 and the Lagoon 500 is interesting..

Sort of like comparing Ferrari to Ford F-150.
Apples and coconuts.
Catana: Fast and adequately strong for most situations.
Lagoon: Adequately fast, very strong and comfortable.
As stated by a well known cat broker in Ft Lauderdale:
If you hit a channel marker with a Catana there will be a lot of $$$$ damage to the vessel.
If you hit a channel marker with a Lagoon there may be a moment of slight temporary slowing, followed by a channel marker floating behind you.
Courses for horses, but a not very valuable comparison effort.
There-that should energize the thread!!

That's a bit harsh. The https://www.catamaransite.com/ website is a used catamaran sales site and this is an article written about two different types of boats referring to the data sets displayed on another Multihull Dynamics, Inc. - Home website. The article does high light areas of interest, particularly to first time catamaran buyers. Of course being a used sales website they can not be too damning of any particular brand or model as they sell all of them (commission free it would seem - so maybe they get the revenue from advertising fees) Nb if you want to see data sets on the dynamics website you will need to join, it's free.

Speaking for Catamaransite. I agree with you and we are working to make it more user friendly. Part of the problem is a massive influx of new content, like the Multihull Dynamics article this thread covers. It's a case of our content has outpaced our current format.

Not sure if you have sailed either, the Catana 42 is actually not all that quick, but it is stronger construction methodology than the Lagoon. I would have to say:
Catana: Barely adequately Fast and adequately strong for most situations.
Lagoon: Adequately slow, adequately strong and comfortable in. flat water when under motor.
