Re: Most Ideal Catamaran

Well duh, the ideal catamaran is one with a single hull.

Sorry, just couldn't help myself , really.

Hmmmm, maybe change the word brilliance to ignorance and you have a winning post!

To quote myself

It looks like Pantawee Marine is joining forces with some other suppliers and they WILL be building semi-production Arrow 1200's! I just got confirmation from Schionning

"It’s all based on a standard design with basic fitout. Upgrade options are offered, but the goal is to make the most affordable Arrow possible." - Schionning

This is HUGE news as a 40' Schionning out of Thailand could be a really interesting new option for those looking for a smaller and less expensive/non-exotic fast cat for cruising/racing. Schionning's are typically very fast boats so this has potential to be a real game changer for those of us interested in that segment of the market but may not have the funds to do a custom carbon build

I'm waiting for more info back on the announcement but this is exciting!!

Re: Most Ideal Catamaran

My 'most ideal' idealized ideal == saline-proof steel. Saline-proof aluminum super-structure.

That would be titanium, and it would be awesome

My ideal preference would be to use a combination of S-glass, Kevlar, and Carbon fiber with epoxy cured in an autoclave. Save the titanium for saildrives and rudder shafts.

Most likely to settle for what I can afford which is why I am looking at a Catana 42 or Nautitech 441

My ideal cat is the same as my ideal mono One that actually sails and doesn't require motoring.

There more.options.on the second.

Of course not - though you know you can get help don't you.

Seriously, why do you feel the need to be bigoted?

Well I was stubborn enough to beat upwind in a Lagoon 380, and can say it was awful. On the otherhand beating in a Bavaria/Nautitech Open 40 in similar conditions was rather pleasant. I have sailed several catamarans including a PDQ 36 (Grenadines), FP Athena (Grenadines), FP Lipari (Chesapeake) , FP Mahe (Azores), FP Lucia (Newport, RI) , Lagoon 380 (BVI), Bavaria Open 40(BVI), and have formed the opinion that I will be happy on a catamaran that sails well. Also I am not that fond of having a diesel under my berth. The current short list is the Nautitech 441 (one helm) and the Catana 42. I am planning on looking at a Schionning Spirited 380 nearby but I don't think it will have the room or capacity I am looking for in a boat to live aboard 4-5 months/year

Re: Most Ideal Catamaran

Close reach from the North Sound, Virgin Gorda to Anegada in about 16kts apparent on a Bavaria Open 40. Making a 50+ foot flybridge cat work to gain any ground against us.

(another note... can't have battens in your sails with in mast furling)...

Sorry.. I beg to differ..

Budget up to 300k

Most to least important for me
1. Frontal View from cockpit and helm because of I'm always worried about hitting something (even offshore)
2. Draft the least the better
3. Engine maintenance accessibility and preferably not sail drives
4. Would like in mast furling if that's even an option on any cats

Anything else really doesn't matter to me
In mast furling aside, you're actually looking for my boat!

The only thing worse than a 6 foot draught would be an even deeper one. (Shudders)

And even on a catamaran, well not in mast, rather around mast, but same concept

Re: Most Ideal Catamaran

Vertical battens are better than nothing I suppose but not near as efficient as horizontal. Basic aerodynamics when you are trying to create a wing
