Re: Maverick 440

Now I'm totally confused/baffled/upset.
I have been "seriously" considering a Maverick 420 for sale. Asking 399k USD. It's fully loaded and ready to sail off. It is hull #9. They only made one 420. Its a 400 with extended read boarding platform, so not quite the 440, but 3.5 feet longer than a 400.

I'm seeking financing it now and should know tomorrow if I'm qualified.

Not sure if I will have issues with it or if I should now NOT consider it. It really fits my needs for equipment, design, wood, interior, etc. I plan to circumnavigate in it.

Re: Maverick 440

Here are two other reviews of the Maverick 440

https://youtu.be/ceh6L30WyAY

https://youtu.be/Jd_kdgajC5I

I've seen the 420 you refer to in the Durban Marina. I haven't been on it. It looks good from the outside. The sugar scoop extensions made for it could have been more aesthetically pleasing but it was the first attempt at extending the 400's rather steep aft steps.

It's called, or was called, 'Perfect'. The Maverick 400s, that one 420 and the 440s are all laid up in the same mould. The 420 was a 400 that the client at the time requested the factory to extend the sugar scoops.

After that one was manufactured, Rudi then got the designer of the Maverick, Phil Southwell, to design an extension to the sugar scoops of the 400. The result is the 440 but they are all still laid up in the same moulds. The 400 has an extension added to it to create the 440.

I've spent the last ten odd years looking at various cats, with the intention of buying a new one when I choose to sell up and cruise. I do not want a production cat. Cut a long story short, based on my criteria, I've chosen to buy the Maverick 440, I initially had hull #23 reserved but my plans got pushed out.

Over the last eight years I've got to know a good few of the Maverick 440 owners personally, they have all expressed their satisfaction with their choice. I've sailed on two different Maverick 440s. I have no affiliation to Maverick, other than I think I can say I've seen more Mavericks than anyone other than the people who make them. I've flown to Cape Town a number of times to visit the factory.

I think if you're going to base your decision to buy any of the various cats out there (in this price range) on one negative report then you will not buy any cat at all. I've personally have had a long discussion with Rudi about Andando, he's honest about it and the steps that were taken. I'm not going to get into that, save to say I feel satisfied.

Good luck and fair winds.

Re: Maverick 440

Thanks all. Well, after looking at boat 8 defects and then a few pictures of hull 10, I decided to pass on hull 9, Maverick 420.

Maybe if the 420 was hull 15 or 20, but the actual next boat, logic tells me that while Andando was taking delivery and stuff breaking, hull #9 was already in the same mould or perhaps out of the mould before ANY issues from #8 were known. THus, any issues in #8 would not have been addressed and changed before #9 was in production. This idea/thought is TOTALLY my thoughts and not based on any fact or information I found.

Ultimately there are tons of boats for sale that will meet my needs. So, given that fact, I chose not to take a chance with the 420....even if it was a 1 in 30 (not sure of the Maverick production numbers). I really liked it and some really nice features and layout, but even if the boat was perfect, just worrying about something for the next 10 years of ownership turned me off. I'd buy a Maverick if the hull number was higher.

Unfortunately there's not just one though ! I will follow this with some pictures of ANOTHER one ....cracks in all the same places as mine but WORSE .These cracks extend almost the full length of both decks .This one also has a large blister -larger than the size of your hand plus others along the port hull .There are approx 60 cracks that I saw - photos to follow

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but the window forms along the sides had been beat up, assumably from piling on the one I saw.

Re: Maverick 440

In reply to a new post .My apologies for the delay in Posting photos as promised.I will reply to the post in the next few days.I have many photos of ANOTHER maverick and I will just post these two ,with the others to follow. This Maverick is actually worse than mine with cracks along the full length of both decks, a large crack down the port bow and also delamination along the port side from the aft cabin windows ( will show later ).Soon after my going public the previous owner of this Maverick contacted me to explain exactly the same issues as I was experiencing.I was asked not to disclose. Since the Cat has been sold I can now post. I will not name the vessel.I do know that cracks appeared on its maiden voyage like mine did. I Also know other members of the forum witnessed issues after its maiden voyage as well.

Re: Maverick 440

I waited until I owned my Maverick for 6 months before I replied to this thread. I purchased the 2019 Annapolis boat show Maverick 440 “Lani” mid June this year. She is a solid and well built boat. The previous owners lived on her full time. I’m a full time live aboard now. I purchased her in Ft Lauderdale and sailed to Annapolis for the summer. I just arrived in Key West for the winter season. My boat has over 15,000 NM under her keels and I put over 2000 of those miles on myself.

I LOVE this boat. She is comfortable, solid, and stable. I think Mavericks are great boats and am very glad I purchased mine.

With all the travel restrictions, I’ve had 10-15 couples, interested in purchasing a Maverick tour my boat. They all were impressed and couldn’t believe she was 3 years old.

This is just my opinion and experience but thought I’d share. The new boats are 24V, Li-Ion, and have a ton of solar. They are fantastic cruising boats. If one is looking at a live aboard boat built for couples, IMO you owe it to yourself to research the Maverick.

Re: Maverick 440

Does anyone know if the cracks and delamination problems were issues that were solved, or if they continued in later model Mavericks? I'm specifically wondering about 2018 Maverick 400.

I own hull #19 which is a 2018 440. I personally have not had any issues with cracks or delamination. I’m very happy and pleased with my Maverick.
