Re: Marine Surveyor in Martinique

Hey man! price of taking the boat out in the carenage antilles depends on size of the boat, and if you want to buy a boat in Mtnq, then I recommend you fly a surveyor from other island. I bought my cat there.

Yes I agree, Captain Frederic Daillant did a great job for me in Martinique two years ago.

Re: Marine Surveyor in Martinique

No worries, are you buying from a charter company?
The charter company I bought from were very honest and helpful, they fixed almost everything that came up on the survey and commented on how thorougher Capt Daillant was.
I also used the engine oil testing service he offers, which gave peace of mind for the Pacific crossing.

Yes. They seem to be ok, but want to make sure the surveyor and the charter company haven't been sleeping together. Do you remember how much the survey cost?

Re: Marine Surveyor in Martinique

The cost was 1600 euro which included airfare and a nights accommodation, the oil test was 50 euro per engine.
I received a 30 page report with colour photos.

Re: Marine Surveyor in Martinique

Not bad, considering the air and lodging. The engines have 3000 hours on them. Not sure what the life expectancy is for a Yanmar, before rebuild. The oil test should give me an idea.

Re: Marine Surveyor in Martinique

Wow! That's great to hear. I think the charter company kept up with the maintenance, as the boat looked real good. I'm not planning on leaving the Caribbean any time soon either, so land will be fairly close, if something should happen.

Re: Marine Surveyor in Martinique

Yeah, I've heard that 5000 hrs is common but some make it to 8000 hrs.
I have also been told that you don't rebuild them as they are so well engineered that everything wears out together and the cost of parts and labour is more than the cost of a new engine.

What out for rudder bearings the ones used on a lot of French boats corrode up and then flog out. The surveyor will pick that up easily anyway.

Re: Marine Surveyor in Martinique

life expectancy depends.
One of our Yanmars got into trouble @2000hrs because the previous owner did not look after the injectors which caused too much diesel to be injected.
That dilluted the oil, which ruined all bearings, the oil pump and a couple of other parts.
Cost for complete overhault was around 4000 EUR.

Re: Marine Surveyor in Martinique

I'm also looking at getting a catamaran surveyed in Martinique as well. Have you decided who you are using?
I basically have found two, Fredric Morel
and Bastien Saint-Jours Saint-Jours Expert Maritime | Expert conseil de plaisance en Martinique, Guadeloupe, Antilles, Caraibes

Frederic is busy until the 8th of April. And I haven't found much information regarding Bastien. He sent me a sample of a report he done recently and it looked ok. His prices are alot cheaper than Frederic. 970 vs 1340 Euro with oil checks.
If you have used someone, please let me know who and how you found the service.

Re: Marine Surveyor in Martinique

Hello,

I have not compared prices between different experts Martinique but I can say that Bastien Saint-Jours is very competent : I made him the expertise of my Leopard 47 a few months ago. The report was very thorough and I am still satisfied with his advice.

Best regards,
Sandrine
