Lost My Port Shroud

I have 46 Robertson & Caine cat and had the port shroud fail on its delivery from FL up to CT. The shroud is 1/2" and the Gibb tang failed according to the rigger who took the shroud down and inspected it. The rigger is recommending we take the mast down and it's rigging for a full on the ground inspection. This is a first for me. Anyone have experience with this type of failure? Any thoughts on the advice the rigger is giving me?

thx

Re: Lost My Port Shroud

a ground inspection is the only way they do around here.........it seems they are not insured to go up the mast........

they will charge you money for the inspection, but if they get the job.......that cost comes off,............I will be doing mine shortly

Re: Lost My Port Shroud

The rigger quoted me $12/ft + $90 per hour for the inspection. The replacement shroud was quoted at $720.

Again this is a first for me and I have no comparison. So, not sure if this is a reasonable quote or not.

Re: Lost My Port Shroud

I think I would "want" it removed and checked. With the boat only being 6 years old, It might be worth contacting the manufacturer and letting them know. The last thing they want is to be known for catastrophic failures.

Re: Lost My Port Shroud

The only experience I have with a lost shroud happened about a month ago when I responded to a another vessel that had lost its rig over the side because of a broken shroud. I had to help cut away the whole rig and send it 600 feet to the bottom. We saved the boom and the vang. Everything else went. Does the inspection sound cheaper now

Re: Lost My Port Shroud

an inspection is what it is......an inspection, and it would suck to have an inspection and have peices replaced, only to have a failure a year later.......but it does happen

For what it is worth. I just bought a 5' 3/8 dolphin cutter from West marine's rig shop for 138.00. Yours is 1/2" and considerably longer. I would say it was fair.

Re: Lost My Port Shroud

6 years and you have had a warning

I would be wanting to check the whole rig not wanting to potentially lose the rig.

cheers

Re: Lost My Port Shroud

Having lost three sailing on other peoples boats, you need an inspection, not want nor any other word implying choice.

Failure can still happen after inspection but it is less likely, which generally means people are less likely to be killed, seriously hurt, or just plain injured on your boat.

sleep well???????

Re: Lost My Port Shroud

This is really do it once and do it right situation. I've seen a half of a mast miss my friend's face by inches as it came down and if it had hit him he would likely be dead.
