Looking for Surveyor Referral near Annapolis

Does anyone have a surveyor they recommend for a pre-purchase survey.

Preferably someone who's multihull savvy and not a shill for the Brokers.

I was really impressed with Mike Previty in Solomans, MD. I don't know whether he's still surveying.

Allan "Buddy" Williams. Independent marine surveyor.

Williams Marine Survey

If the above link gets deleted or edited, it is
williamsmarinesurvey dot com

email wmsbud@msn.com

He definitely has the customer's best interests at heart!

He did two catamaran surveys for me, a 1996 Lagoon 35ccc and a 1995 Fountaine Pajot Tobago 35. I withdrew my offer for the Tobago 35 based on his recommendations for repairs and problems/problem areas he cited. The owner ended up not selling the boat for almost two years (and finally made the repairs/corrected the problems).

I was present for both surveys and was exhausted watching him at work!

IMHO, he will give you one of the most complete surveys you will get. They were certainly much more detailed than the survey I got in Seattle--I probably should have paid his plane fare!

Good luck.

Marshall

Alternately,

If someone knows of someone in the area with a trained eye that can help determine if the expense of a full survey is even warranted.

waderpro,

If you need a loan to buy the boat, you likely will not be able to do it without a marine survey!

Re: Looking for surveyor referral near Annapolis

My intentions are not coming across well, my bad.

I have every intention of a full in/out of water marine survey, engine survey, rigging survey, and sea trial.

I am on the opposite coast from the boat, and am trying to figure out if the boat is worthy of proceeding to the steps and expenses noted above.

I do not know of a surveyor but, I like your idea of someone local doing a walkaround first. I'd be happy to do for someone in my area...
Are some surveyors really shills for brokers?

waderpro,

Now that is much more clear! Most multihull sailors (in fact most sailors) are a helpful bunch. AND sailing season hasn't really kicked in yet, so someone might be eager to take a look for you. Remember, though, east coast sailors are probably working like crazy to get their boats ready for the upcoming season because we are dieing to get out after this winter that wasn't!

If you are on the Pacific coast and the boat is in the Annapolis area, I suggest you just come out and post a message here, or more clearly state your post on here on Cruisers Forum,
"I am on the Pacific coast. Is there a multihull sailor in the Annapolis area who could take a look at a boat for me to help me decide if it is worth pursuing further?"

Your intentions should come across pretty well!

Marshall

BTW, I'd be willing to look for you if you find a boat on Long Island.

I've used Peter Hartoft several times on several boats. He is thorough and produces a good report for a reasonable fee. He is well known in the Annapolis area (where I live). hartoftmarinesurvey dot com

Couldn't have done a better job. Thorough and fearless with a very aggressive broker looking over his shoulder.

Sailor in Annapolis area

I am in Charleston, SC. Is there a monohull sailor in the Annapolis area who could take a quick look at a 1976 KP44 sailboat at the Port Annapolis Marina for me to help me decide if it is worth pursuing further? I plan to drive up to Annapolis tomorrow - May 11, but hate to make the trip if the boat is not what it is advertised as. Thanks!!
