Long term charter in the Med

We are looking to a three month (or so) period in the Med next northern summer and perhaps the same thing the next year.

Option 1 is to buy a boat and sell after two years and take the loss.

Option 2 is to look at the viability of two long term charters.

I am starting to make my own enquiries but any input would be helpful.

Questions that come to mind are insurance. Ability to roam to wherever one wanted. Obviously, rates (should thre be a discount for the long term nature of the charter).

Input on whether Option 1 or 2 is a better plan would also be welcome.

consider spring instead of summer

The owner of a charter boat consider summer months NOT as the best period but the ONLY period of the year to make some money so consider cruising in spring the East Med (Greece, Cyprus and Turkey) and you will find nice weather and much better prices.

If you plan to charter also a second season maybe consider talking with Moorings / SunSail / Kiriaculis so you can trade your boat in a different cruising area and eventually sell the boat the third year.

Fair winds, Dario

Hi Daniel,

As far as Turkey goes, I can give you some info..

For two successive years of chartering out of Turkey, depending on the boat you choose, you can obviously get some discounts form the price list. The total discount, my guess, cannot be more than 20-25 % off the list price. To give you an idea an Athena 38 could come at around 1.900 €, A Belize 43 at 3.000 €..
You will be ollowed to sails in Greek and Turkish waters but beyond that might be problematic.

This would make much more than 2 years of deppreciation on any boat + you can sail anywhere w/out restri ction. So, if you have the cash to buy a used boat and accept the deppreciation, you would be much better off this way, compared to long term chartering.
If you need further help, pls send to me private note.

Cheers
