The Seawind may have been an 1160, not a 1250.

Which makes the Lagoon 450F quite weird, as it is actually 46' !

And the Lagoon 500 is actually 50ft 10" close enough to 51ft.

as i say often, one should take metre and verify claimed dimensions, or face surprises later. Funny how many times manufacturer claims were off (always less, reverse for weight) when doing my research.

As...small...as...possible...

I just purchased a 2016 L450F OV only because I have so many kids.

Budget will dictate what models you can entertain; and if you need an exit strategy in the next 2-5 years you’ll get steered by good brokers to get either the newest (used) model you can afford, or an older well maintained and equipped vessel that has already sustained most of its depreciation ( but still might be a money pit, or maybe they all are[emoji23]).

My L450F in person is HUGE and I’ve been on all the other models as well. Our sea trial was in the Caribbean with 15-20kts with 1m swell (nothing) and it was a lot of boat.

You could have squeezed them all into a FP Mahe 36 ten feet shorter. Same number of cabins but of course very different comfort level and budget

so the separate hull of the owners version gives the parents enough privacy to produce even more offspring?

Eight people on a mahe is impossible with missy one head, unless the kids are all boys and you keep a spare bucket in the cockpit.

Ja klar, Rabbi! Our oldest is nine, so they conform nicely to small spaces.

Our sailing club has a Mahe 36; nice boat, but it makes even your L380 look like the Titanic

The L450F OV will make resale in a couple years very easy in our area. We’ll either love it and need a bit more room or be ready to move back ashore.

To the craziness...

6 kids in 9 years, seems like a good reproduction rate (and some fun) !

Keep in mind that kids keep growing. We just have two (now 11 and 12) and even though they love cruising we had to learn this year that you can't stop puberty once it sets in.
Ours loved to share cabins for years, this year they wanted to kill each other after the first week.

Re: Leopard VS Lagoon

One model Seawind, ( Australian manufacturer, in the period) was their
1000XL
It is 10.85 metres.
The prior model, a 1000, was 10 m, but due to a few wners adding transom extensions, the manufacturer took note, and did same, kept the "1000" but tacked on the "XL".

I'm currently at the Sydney boat show one thing I always look at first is how high is the boom, when one drops the sail you have to be able to reach the sail to pull the last meter or so of the sail down particularly in strong winds, I just walked all over the latest Leopard 50 a magnificent craft, but I could not reach the sail (I am about 6 ft) how one could manage that is beyond me. I am thinking of selling and buying a new craft, really 40 to 42 seems about right for a couple like us but a 45 would seem nice also, walked all over the FP 42 very attractive craft and I can easily reach the boom, just something to think about after you have brought the craft you have to manage it when the winds build the waves build the bigger the sail and boom the more their is to flap around can be quite dangerous if one cant control all that power. The new Leopard 40 is a lot of boat in my view as well, the Lagoon 42 is also worth considering, my final thoughts for a newbie is 45 is about as big as you should go unless you can afford a crew then that 50 footer looks real cool.

I don't think I can reach the gooseneck of a Lagoon 440 or 450.

Personally I think this is an issue but would love to hear otherwise. I crossed off these yachts because of the super high booms.

Re: Leopard VS Lagoon

I chartered one Leopard and I could just not get comfortable in the cockpit. It got seriously annoying after a while.

You just need to do a bit of lateral thinking to deal with that problem.

I wanted to set my boat up so that the main could be brought down completely without leaving the cockpit. Simple solution was to attach a line to the same shackle as the main halyard, attach a block at the base of the mast and run the line back to a clutch near the sheet winch beside the helm. I called this line a downhaul but I know it is not what a downhaul is normally used for. Then when I need to drop the main, let go the halyard and then if it doesn't come all the way down haul on the 'downhaul' to bring it the rest of the way. Worked every time even downwind with 40+ knots of wind in the sail.
