Leopard 45 or 50

Hi!
I have ordered new 45th but now thinking about to change to 50th. Because I will sailing from Cape Town to Madeira and I think 50th is better. What do you think - 45th is enough to long blue water trip? Does 50th fits to sailing by couple?n

Nothing. Few charters in Mediterranean by skipper.

Check out Sailing Sisu on YouTube - South African couple with limited experience to start took a 45 out of Cape Town to the Med successfully. Plenty of boat for a couple...

When a US customer opts for a "water delivery", Leopard sails the boat from Cape Town to Ft Lauderdale. So yes, pretty much every boat they have is a blue water boat (given the right preparation and crew). Keep in mind, obtaining insurance may be difficult (or impossible) if you have no experience.

Re: Leopard 45 or 50

Congrats on the new boat. Just hire a good captain to help you take it to madeira. You can afford it. You'll learn a lot on the way. Leopard probably have captains they can recommend to you. Sounds like a fun trip.

Either one is fine. Probably wont be your last boat.

It's absolutely frightening to me that someone would take advice that potentially could be life or death from youtube. Why why why?

@AlexTurin, get yourself some training, certification and hire qualified crew until you are qualified and competent enough. Never mind "reality tv/internet" shows. This isn't a "how do I fix this carburetor or electric pump" scenario.

Also, have you looked into getting insurance on a new vessel yet? Did they not ask about your fitness to operate it?

Re: Leopard 45 or 50

The OP’s question is about 45 or 50 - the Sisu/YouTube suggestion relates to seeing if the 45 works as a couples’ boat or if he needs bigger.

Re: Leopard 45 or 50

A 45 is much easier to sail. get a captain to give you a few lessons
then just practice a few short trips . Just realise you will make a lot of mistakes but just ha

Re: Leopard 45 or 50

hang in there. If you can manage ,a good course by the moorings would be very benifical.

Re: Leopard 45 or 50

It really depends on how many folks you plan to have on board to help with your passage. I can report that our 47 footer is more than enough boat for us as a couple and has plenty of room for two more couples to comfortably join us.

Another thing to consider is general cost of ownership differences. The 50 will cost more to haul out, and maintain. The 50 will cost more each time you decide to pull into a marina. Depending upon where you sail in the world, air draft may become an issue. As an example, around the gulf coast most bridges are reported to be 73 feet. The mast head on our 47 is just under 71 feet. I spend a good amount of time looking at tide charts and pulling water level measurements from monitoring stations just to make sure we can get under with only minor antenna dragging. My point being is that it results in anxious moments each and every time. The 50 footer will no doubt have a taller rig and may limit where you can go.......again, depends upon where you will be using the boat. The extra 5 feet will give you more space, but I doubt that it will make that much difference in handling performance and ride.
