Leopard 3800 vs Lagoon 380

Hi,
Been lurking for too long. About pull the trigger and purchase either a 2000 leopard 38/moorings 3800 or a 2001 lagoon 380. Both sight unseen. I can find lots of info on the L38 but hardly anything about the Leopard.

Are there any owners out there of the Leopard 38 that can tell me about the characteristics of the boat are? Sailing performance, ergonomics, the lower bridge deck. Any inherent problems with this model ...Moisture issues in the deck? From what I can gather the leopards are balsa cored below the water line as opposed to the L38 which is solid below.

What's the hobby horsing like, I noted that the LWL on the leopard is only 33ft + vs the l38 at 36Ft. Is this a major factor?

Also the leopards of that time seem to have these westerbeke engines albeit quite la high horsepower (42hp) for a boat that size. Any thoughts on the engines?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

Re: Leopard 3800 vs Lagoon 380

ellewater, your information about the Leopard is incorrect.
LWL for the Leopard 38 is 36' and we installed Yanmar 29's in them, not Westerbekes.
Happy to assist with other details, about this model.
From the Leopard Specialsts in Dania Beach,

Re: Leopard 3800 vs Lagoon 380

Hi Jim, I am referring to the Simonis designed leopard 38s the older ones from late 90s to early 2000s. Every spec I spec sheets shows the waterline to be in the 34ft range. Seems like quite a loss due to hull design for a 38ft boat.

IMHO, if sailing faster is a priority for you, go with the Leopard. The Lagoon 380 is underpowered. That's not to say that it is a defective design, it is not. I would have no qualms about sailing a Lagoon 380 around the world. It is a blue water-capable achievement; but the Leopard 38/39 design is faster, and none the less seaworthy. Just MHO, but Morelli
and Melvin designed better Leopards than Simonis and Voogd.

We don't see too many of the earlier versions anymore, thought you were referencing the newer one, there were 64 earlier models built (1998) and 62 from 2009 - definitely different hulls.
All the new Leopard are by Simonis.

Re: Leopard 3800 vs Lagoon 380

Im.owner of a 1999 Leopard 38 and my boat just recently has been measured due to real costs of being on the hard.

Length is 36 feet.

I own boat number 30 of 60 built may 1999, in the water by jan.2000.

Engines are westerbeke 42B.

I am.looking for a specialists, who has the time to answer some of my questions, which urgently need a response. In return I will happily givr you all infos and experience made during my ownership of 3 years now.

What I need is precise details about the complete rigging.

What I need are infos on the props as my engines only go 4,5 knots with 2000rpm. Thats way to low and not seaworthy.

I am also looking for infos where to hook up a spinnaker.

Thanks for now and greetings from grenada.

Are you running 2 blade or 3 blade props? What pitch? What diameter? Best to check out other cats and ask the owners what their performance is. Or ask your yard to give you input on the next haul out.

Re: Leopard 3800 vs Lagoon 380

I am running 3 blade props now on shafts When I was on the hard a week ago, no numbers could be seen on the props.
And I cannot ask anybody with the same boat as there is nobody around me with the same boat, and when I find someone (for example in the yahoo leopard group).they know the same I do ... not enough.
