Thanks for the article. I would like to know the design of the catamaran. When I went through the Panama canal many years ago, there was a catamaran named Anna, and I wonder if it was the same one.

It was an unusual design - part homebuilt and part from a manufacturer that went out of business.

Apparently they'd left 6 weeks prior and encountered bad weather and had to return to NZ for repairs. So terrible luck really, but that's New Zealand sailing for ya. Things can get out of hand in a hurry.

Quote:
My last travelogue concluded with us having just checked out of Tauranga, New Zealand and
sailing towards Tonga. Subsequently that passage to Tonga was interrupted by bad weather,
we were knocked around, and we returned to New Zealand to make repairs to the boat.

Hmmm,

I seem to recall that just a few days ago everyone was critcizing Abby S. for not scuttling her yacht when she abandoned it. Wonder why no one is saying those things this time? Maybe if they had had a teenager on board...

Cheers,

Jim
PS Despite my carping, I'm sorry to hear of their misfortune, and hope that they will tell the world what happened to cause the inversion

They seems having lots of bad luck. Feel very sorry for them!

The boat seems to be only one year old.

Lovely boat. Shame it flipped.

It would be great if all these catamaran capsize incidents could be bought together on one thread so information on why/how etc could be easily accessible for all to learn from. Maybe a table of some kind?

cheers.

Does that boat have a heavy-weather steering station which is NOT completely exposed and in front of the cabin? I'd guess that one of the factors which contributed to their capsize was that the autopilot was steering because they couldn't stay out at that wheel.
