Lagoon 450 Weight

I was just looking at some Lagoon cat specs and saw this:
LAGOON 450:
L.O.A. 45'10"
Max. beam 25'9''
Draft 4'3''
Light displacement (EEC) 37265 Lbs

LAGOON 500:
Overall length 51'
Overall beam 28’
Draft 4'7''
Light displacement (EEC) 37639 lbs
Now, as everyone can tell, L500 is significantly larger boat (more than 4 feet longer and 2 feet wider), yet it weights only slightly more that L450. What gives? Just my speculation: could it be because Lagoon uses more and more polyester instead of vinylester in new boats to save $$$? I think that older Lagoons were built mostly using vinylester, but I noticed that new Lagoon literature mentions mostly polyester. Or is it that L500 is just not stiff enough?

By my calculations that Lagoon 45 is over 16 tons lightship! Surely they can't be that heavy?

As evidenced from my earlier research Lagoon will do small and large things to save a buck and have a less safe boat.

and just what plastic resins are Lagoons made of? Polyester is lots cheaper and easier to apply- Vinylester requires far stricter quality controls involving mix, humidity control and density application------yet is far superior in strenghth, flexibility without cracking, and waterproofness (wont get blisters)--of course it costs more both in labor costs and the material cost----------anybody know? some boats have vinylester thin layer on outside over polyester base layup.

Yes the previous model (the Lagoon 440) is significantly lighter that the 450 too

Your numbers are incorrect, the correct ld for the 450 is 34178 lbs, so if you work out the displacement per inch you have two boats that are pretty evenly matched. .

The 440 = 62.14182 lbs/inch
The 500 = 61.50163 lbs/inch

Calculated on linear inch rather than square inch so there will be some further differences.

I did a comparison some years ago of the published displacements of a number of different cats across the ranges and Lagoon was consistently the heaviest boat in each, usually by quite a margin.

How much you can trust any of the published figures is an interesting question. It could also be that Lagoon is using "honest" weights and the others, aren't. Obtaining an actual weight of any given cat is actually rather difficult, since the travel lift scales for the lifts needed to handle the beam often aren't accurate, either.

In many respects, it becomes a moot point if the sailing and weight carrying ability meets your needs. If it doesn't, then look at something else.

Two thoughts:

1. Saving weight costs money. So, maybe they're trying to reach a market with the 450 which is more price-sensitive than the 500. Or maybe they're selling more luxury rather than sailing performance?
2. Lightship displacement - perhaps some things which are standard on one model aren't on another? It's really hard to actually get an apples-to-apples comparison.

It's strange that the draft on the 450 is less than the 500 (1.3 vs 1.4m). That would suggest less displacement. Unless it has significantly beamier hulls which would then explain the similarity in displacements.

I thought the draft measurements were in fact the most interesting, once you start getting to 1.5 metre you are losing some of the shallow draft advantage.

The Lagoon 450 only carries 300 litres of water and weighs in at 15.5 t.
