Lagoon 450 and radar dome

I have a 2018 Lagoon 450 and want to put a radar dome on it. Does anyone know what is the best dome mount kit and what size dome will fit. Boat is in PR and I am in Florida. Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Lagoon 450 and radar dome

Most domes are either 20 inches or 24/25". I doubt a 4-5" difference will be that significant, but if you want to err on the side of caution, go with 20".

The Mount will typically be based on the dome manufacturer.

Re: Lagoon 450 and radar dome

Thanks Shrew
I had the 24" B&G...had to return it was too big. The boat came with B&G electronics and the smallest B&G dome is 20". Now I'm beginning to question the 20" purchase. I was hoping someone has actually installed a 20" dome and could tell me it would fit. What is the biggest dome anyone has installed on a 450?

I am looking to buy a Lagoon 45 if you decide the radar becomes an issue and you decide to sell her let me know. Haha.

Hey Passage420, I'll certainly keep that in mind if it becomes too big of an issue!

Re: Lagoon 450 and radar dome

Can anyone with a Lagoon 450 tell me what size/brand radar dome they have mounted. If it is a non B&G does it integrate easily with the B&G Electronics on board? Thx

Re: Lagoon 450 and radar dome

Could you describe the problem that made a 24" "too big". What was the restriction or interference? Are you attempting to install on an existing radar dome mount?

Re: Lagoon 450 and radar dome

The dome would be placed above the lower mast spreader. The distance between the forward spreader shroud and the mast is what is limiting the radar dome. See attached pic

The forward shrouds look like they're crossing right there. From the pic, it looks like you're best bet would be to move the deck light and install BELOW the lower mast spreader.

Weird, all of the pics I look at online don't show a standing rigging set-up on a Lagoon 450 like what you have in your image.

Re: Lagoon 450 and radar dome

The issue is the distance between the forward cable of the lower spreader and the mast. The distance between the mast and the forward spreader cable is the same above or below the forward spreader. Maybe these pics help. Thx

Re: Lagoon 450 and radar dome

I couldn't find any pics of other 450's showing that same rig set-up. You'd think the forestay could handle that and there'd be no need for the forward spreaders and additional stays. It looks like it's built like a brick $#!t house. But it also looks like it's an impediment to installing radar.

Instead of installing it on the front of the mast could you install it on the starboard side of the mast? I have seen this before, it would eliminate the shading behind you that you normally get with a forward mounted radar.

Re: Lagoon 450 and radar dome

I put up an aluminum post at the transom steps on my Manta Catamaran, reinforced by a bracket to the arch and high enough so the cone of microwaves went well over the heads of anyone in the cockpit. Much simpler and more out of the way than mast mounted.
Sailed in lots of wet and foggy places, B.C, Alaska, Newfoundland, Labrador, northern Atlantic coast and never a problem with distance of signal or mast or wet sail shadows. I would do that again. Was a Furuno 24mile closed radome.

Re: Lagoon 450 and radar dome

The Lowarance, B&G, Simrad 3/4G radars are 19.3" diameter x 11" high (diagonal distance is 22.2"). Garmin 18" is actually 20" x 10" (diagonally 22.4")

There are some traditional radars that use 12" domes Si-Tex and Hummingbird.

Maybe these would fit.
