In this case, having been up there many time along the last 10 years / 20.000+ nautical mile, in many different type of sea, I can only share a different experience, and the fact that I've never felt insecure at all on the fly, sailing alone or not, night or day.
In fact, in rough sea, being quite high gives a visibility and a sense of protection I hadn't experienced on boats where the helm would be way lower.

I always thought the Flybridge would be one of the worst places for stability to sit, but ended up buying a Lagoon 440 anyway.

Got to say its great even in big winds and swells on the flybridge - Just came across the Australian bight and saw solid 35Kt gusting to 42 with 6-7M swell - No issues about being up top - the only time it was a bit Gnarly was dropping the main and ploughing into it whilst doing so - This was before the wind hit the solid 30s, but the swell was still up - Managed to get drenched even up on the flybridge.

As far as docking goes, single handed in anything but benign conditions would be very hard, especially for a novice to Cats (like myself) - even with 2 it can be hard - had a 15Kt Beam wind and 2Kt Beam current - You had to be very quick to get the line on before being taken off - Single handed it would not happen.

The 450 is a good vessel. I you are alone on board you have mainly to focus on manœuvre and especially an automatic reef. I would like the 40 Leopard in your configuration or the 44 of the same brand.

Re: Lagoon 450... Am I crazy singlehanding?

I’ve had a Lagoon 450F now for 18 months and we’ve sailed about 8,000 miles, Bahamas and East coast from FL to Maine and back. I added a Leisure Furl fueling boom last year. We also have a hard top (must have upgrade for this boat) solar, water maker, dive compressor, lithium, and a nice B&G nav system. My wife is pretty much just along for the ride. Sailing, anchoring and docking the boat by myself is easy. Grabbing a mooring or anchoring with the remote chain counter is easy. Docking is not a problem. Just get one line tied off and spring in. We love the flybridge with lights and full enclosure when needed, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The only people who don’t like the F are the ones who don’t have it. The only time you might need help is when docking and that’s what dock masters are for. We stayed out at anchor and on moorings most of the time when traveling anyways.
Grabbing a mooring ball by yourself with be the biggest challenge but just take it slow and time the wind and current. You should go for it and once you have the boat, all your friends will be begging to come and help.

Can you give us some idea of the cost to convert to the Leisure Furl furling boom?

Thx,

Thx,
The boom was about $23k. New main about $8k custom Awlgrip was $4k. Haul, unstep, install, rigging upgrades, etc.

All in $45k for me but could be done cheaper.
